Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Saint Jude’s

By nightfall, Damian’s inner circle had converted the grand salon into a command center. Three men in immaculate tactical suits stood by the monitors, running background checks and scrubbing deleted hospital servers.

I sat on an oversized velvet sofa with Leah asleep in my arms, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket. Her small face looked peaceful for the first time in her life, her breathing deep and even, one hand still clinging securely to my collar.

Damian hung up a burner phone, his knuckles pale from gripping the device. He turned to Marco, his head of security.

"Speak."

"We raided Dr. Julian Vance's private clinic twenty minutes ago, Boss," Marco said in a low, grim voice. "The place was wiped clean. Shredded files, incinerated hard drives. But Julian made one mistake. He didn't clear his offshore accounts. Three million dollars was transferred to a shell corporation in the Cayman Islands forty-eight hours after Clara’s supposed delivery."

"Who signed the authorization?" Damian’s voice was lethal, a calm before an apocalyptic storm.

"The signature was encrypted, but the routing originated from within this estate," Marco replied, casting a cautious glance toward the arched hallway leading to the west wing. "Specifically, from the private terminal in Lady Eleanor's quarters."

Eleanor Vance. Damian’s stepmother. The matriarch who had orchestrated his arranged marriage to Vanessa before the girl mysteriously vanished.

My heart hammered against my ribs. "Why would your family do this to me?" I asked, looking up at Damian through the dim lighting. "I was an orphan. I worked two jobs to pay for college and my medical bills. I had nothing! Why take my baby?"

Damian walked toward me, his movements heavy with sorrow. He crouched down in front of the sofa, bringing his eyes level with mine.

"Because of my father's will," he said quietly. "My father loathed Eleanor and her daughter Vanessa. Before he died, he left a mandate: the Vance syndicate and ninety percent of the family trust would pass exclusively to me—on one condition. I had to produce an heir within three years of his death, or the entire empire reverted to Eleanor."

He closed his eyes for a second, breathing in the scented air of his daughter's hair. "Eleanor knew I would never marry Vanessa. So when Julian discovered a young, completely undocumented woman in his clinic carrying a child whose blood profile matched an anonymous surrogate request... they saw an opportunity."

The pieces fell into place with terrifying clarity. "You were the anonymous father," I breathed.

"Julian convinced me that he had used a surrogate in Europe," Damian confessed, his voice trembling with an agonizing guilt. "He brought Leah to me, claiming her surrogate mother died in childbirth. They kept you broken and quiet, believing your baby was dead, while Eleanor waited for Leah to turn two so she could petition for joint custody through Vanessa."

"They wanted to use her as a pawn," I gasped, hugging Leah closer to my chest. "They wanted to control your billions through my daughter."

Suddenly, the phone on the glass coffee table buzzed with an encrypted chime.

Dr. Keller’s name flashed on the screen.

Damian picked it up, pressing speakerphone.

"Damian," Dr. Keller’s voice came through, clear and undeniable. "The sequencing from Zurich is complete. The probability of maternity between Clara Rossi and Leah Vance is ninety-nine point nine-nine percent. She is the mother. Beyond any shadow of legal or scientific doubt."

Damian didn't hesitate. He stood up, towering like an avenging angel, and pulled a matte-black pistol from his shoulder holster.

"Marco," he commanded, his eyes turning to absolute ice. "Lock down the perimeter. Bring Eleanor and Vanessa to the basement."
