Chapter 10 - The Desperate Confrontation

That evening, the Grand Hyatt ballroom was illuminated with golden light for the Annual Metropolitan Preservation Gala. Claire was the guest of honor, receiving the city's Philanthropist of the Year award for her work in preserving historic landmarks and revitalizing inner-city housing.

She looked radiant in an emerald green silk gown, her diamond necklace sparkling beneath the massive crystal chandeliers. Mayors, senators, and corporate titans lined up to shake her hand, eager to align themselves with the Montgomery empire.

"To Claire Montgomery," Marcus Reed proclaimed, raising his glass during the toast. "A woman of extraordinary vision, unyielding integrity, and the strength to rebuild what others sought to destroy!"

The room erupted into thunderous applause. Claire smiled gracefully, taking the microphone to thank the board and her dedicated team.

Outside, the autumn rain beat violently against the floor-to-ceiling glass atrium doors leading to the grand terrace.

Suddenly, a commotion broke out near the service entrance.

Shouting echoed over the soft jazz quartet. The heavy mahogany side doors were shoved open violently, and a sodden, wild-eyed figure stumbled into the grand ballroom.

Gasps rippled through the hundreds of elite guests.

It was Daniel.

His hair was soaked and plastered to his forehead, his cheap trench coat dripping water onto the pristine marble floor. He looked haggard, his cheeks sunken, his eyes wide with a terrifying, manic gleam. Attached to his right ankle, visible beneath his wet trouser cuff, was a blinking green light from his electronic monitor.

"Claire!" he screamed, his voice raw, tearing through the elegant music. "Claire!"

Four private security guards immediately closed in on him, but Daniel swung his wet duffel bag wildly, knocking one guard off balance and stumbling toward the raised dais where Claire stood.

"You took everything from me!" Daniel roared, pointing a trembling, dirt-caked finger at her while the elite of high society scrambled away in horror. "You sat there pretending to be a quiet little housewife while you orchestrated my destruction! You orchestrated my downfall from day one!"

Claire didn't flinch. She stepped forward to the edge of the stage, looking down at him with cold, unshakable authority.

"You destroyed yourself, Daniel," she said, her voice amplified through the microphone, echoing through the massive hall. "You stole from your own workers. You betrayed your vows. You were given an empire on a silver platter, and you traded it for your own petty greed."

"I am the master of Sterling Construction!" he screamed hysterically as three armed guards tackled him to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back. His face was slammed into the wet marble, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "You think you won, Claire? You think this is over? You have no idea who is coming for you! You think I was the one who found those offshore accounts? You think I was acting alone?!"

Claire's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Get him out of here," she ordered the head of security calmly.

"You're a dead woman walking, Claire!" Daniel shrieked as the guards dragged him backward across the polished floor toward the rain-swept exit. "He knows what you did! He knows what your father took from him twenty years ago! He paid my bail, Claire! HE PAID MY BAIL—"

The heavy soundproof doors slammed shut, cutting off his deranged screams.

The room fell into dead silence. Guests stared in shock, whispers spreading like wildfire. Claire took a deep, steadying breath, smoothed her silk gown, and turned back to the podium with a calm smile.

"Ladies and gentlemen," she said smoothly, "let us continue our evening."
