Chapter 7 - Margaret's Desperate Gambit

While Daniel was being processed at the federal detention center downtown, Margaret Sterling was desperately executing her final, toxic plan.

Sitting in the lobby of an upscale hotel where she had managed to book a room using an old, near-maxed department store credit card, she opened her phone. Margaret had always fancied herself a social media influencer among the local elite. She had twenty-five thousand followers across the city's country club circuits, charity boards, and high-society circles.

With trembling, manicured fingers, she recorded a tearful video.

"My dear friends," she sobbed, holding her phone at a flattering angle while forcing tears to spill onto her cheeks. "I am speaking to you from a place of unimaginable heartbreak. Last night, my sweet, generous son Daniel and I were brutally cast out of our family home by his ruthless, calculating wife, Claire. She has stolen his company, fabricated ridiculous lies to destroy his reputation, and left a senior citizen homeless on the street with nowhere to turn. Please share this. The world needs to know the true face of the gold-digger who infiltrated our noble family."

Within two hours, the video racked up tens of thousands of views. Local society blogs picked it up. Scandalized comments flooded social media: *Is this true?* *Claire always seemed so quiet!* *How could she treat poor Margaret that way?*

Margaret sat back on the plush hotel bed, a wicked, triumphant smile spreading across her face. *Let’s see her hold her head high at the Symphony Gala now,* she thought.

Her phone rang. It was an unknown private number.

"Margaret Sterling?" a sharp female voice spoke as soon as she answered.

"Yes! Are you with the press? I am ready to give an exclusive interview about the emotional abuse—"

"I am Special Agent Davis with the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division," the voice cut in, cold and completely immune to Margaret's dramatic cadence.

Margaret's smile froze. "The... the IRS?"

"We have been monitoring your public statements, Mrs. Sterling," Agent Davis said. "And more importantly, we have received a comprehensive financial audit from Aegis Capital regarding the 'Sterling Heritage Foundation,' the non-profit charity where you serve as executive director."

Margaret's throat went completely dry. "That... that is a legitimate cultural charity—"

"A charity that claimed two million dollars in tax deductions over the past four years for 'historical preservation,'" Agent Davis continued relentless. "Yet forensic receipts show those funds paid for your personal facelift in Beverly Hills, seven designer fur coats, and eighteen thousand dollars in private country club dining fees. Your video this morning provided public admission that you possess no legitimate independent income and that these expenditures were managed under your direct authority."

"No... wait, that was all Daniel's idea! Daniel managed the accounts!" Margaret shrieked, panic clawing at her chest.

"A search warrant for your personal safe-deposit boxes has been issued," Agent Davis concluded. "Officers are on their way to your hotel room right now to confiscate your passport. Do not attempt to check out."

The line clicked off.

Margaret dropped the phone onto the bed. Outside her door, the heavy, synchronized footsteps of law enforcement echoed down the carpeted hallway.
