Chapter 8 - The Fall from Grace

Forty-eight hours after the dinner that was supposed to end with Claire begging for mercy, the Sterling name was completely erased from high society.
In the federal courthouse downtown, the magistrate judge slammed his gavel down with an echoing strike that sealed Daniel's immediate future.
"Given the severe flight risk, the overseas accounts currently under asset-tracing investigations, and the attempt by co-conspirators to flee the country via international flights, bail is set at five million dollars cash. Defendant will be remanded into custody."
Daniel stood at the defense table, his wrists chained to a leather restraint belt around his waist. He looked across the gallery.
There were no friends. No country club buddies. No Jessica.
The only person sitting in the front row was Claire.
She sat perfectly poised, wearing an elegant dark wool coat, watching him with calm, detached clarity. There was no hatred in her eyes; there was something far worse: complete indifference. She looked at him the way one might look at an old, broken chair being hauled off to the landfill.
As the US Marshals grabbed Daniel's shoulders to lead him through the side door to the holding cells, he twisted his neck, his face contorted in agony.
"Claire!" he yelled, his voice echoing through the vaulted courtroom. "Claire, please! Talk to me! You can't let them send me to a federal penitentiary! I'll sign whatever you want! I'll give up everything!"
Claire didn't move. She didn't blink.
"You already gave up everything, Daniel," she said quietly, her voice barely louder than a whisper, yet carried clearly across the quiet room. "The moment you thought you were too big to be decent."
The heavy metal doors swung open, and the marshals shoved Daniel through, the heavy clink of his chains disappearing down the concrete hallway until the heavy steel door slammed shut.
Out in the corridor, the media was waiting like a pack of wolves. Flashbulbs went off in blinding bursts as Claire exited the courtroom alongside Arthur Vance.
"Ms. Montgomery! Is it true you have taken full control of Sterling Construction?"
"Ms. Montgomery! What is your comment regarding the IRS indictment against your mother-in-law Margaret Sterling?"
Claire paused at the top of the courthouse steps, looking into the sea of cameras.

"Sterling Construction is being rebranded as Montgomery Urban Infrastructure," she stated clearly, her voice commanding the entire plaza. "Every subcontractor, vendor, and blue-collar worker whose paychecks were threatened by the previous management will be paid in full with a ten percent compensatory bonus by tomorrow morning. As for Mr. Sterling and his mother, their actions speak for themselves. Justice is simply doing its job."
She walked down the steps into her waiting town car, leaving the flashing cameras and the wreckage of the Sterling dynasty behind her.
