Chapter 11 - The Hidden Benefactor

By midnight, the gala was over, and the city was washed clean by the receding thunderstorm.
Claire stood by the panoramic window of her private penthouse on the top floor of Montgomery Towers, holding a glass of vintage red wine. Below her, the glittering lights of Manhattan spread out like a carpet of fallen stars.
She had won. The company was hers, Daniel was returning to a federal penitentiary for violating his bail conditions with the public disturbance, and her life was entirely under her own command.
Yet, Daniel’s final words echoed in the back of her mind like a chilling bell:
*He knows what your father took from him twenty years ago. He paid my bail.*
Her father, Charles Montgomery, had died in a private plane crash twenty years ago. The official report had cited mechanical failure in severe weather. It was the sudden tragedy that had forced an eighteen-year-old Claire to take control of the family trust under the guidance of trusted trustees.
A quiet knock sounded at the penthouse door.
Arthur Vance entered, holding a thick, weathered leather portfolio tied with black ribbon and sealed with a heavy crimson wax stamp. His face was completely pale, devoid of his usual composed confidence.
"Claire," Arthur said, his voice barely above a whisper. "A courier just dropped this off at the lobby reception desk. It bypassed all standard mail screening. It was delivered by a personal emissary from the Von Berg Private Bank in Geneva."
Claire set her wine glass down on the marble console table. "What is it?"
"It’s an original asset ledger from 2004," Arthur said, his hand trembling slightly as he handed the portfolio to her. "Signed by your late father two days before his fatal flight."
Claire broke the wax seal, untying the ribbon with quick, tense fingers. She pulled out the yellowed parchment pages, scanning the formal corporate registry.
At the bottom of the final page, beneath her father’s distinctive signature, was a second signature—a name that made the breath catch in Claire’s throat, freezing the blood in her veins.
The co-owner of Montgomery Holdings. The silent partner who had owned forty-nine percent of her family's empire before vanishing completely after the crash.
Before Claire could turn the page, her private phone on the table buzzed.
A text message appeared on the screen from an untraceable, encrypted satellite number.
Claire picked up the phone with cold fingers and opened the message.

*"Daniel was an entertaining puppet, little niece. But now that you've gathered all my assets back into one place... I believe it's time we discussed what really happened to your father on that mountain."*
Claire stared at the screen, her heart pounding against her ribs as headlights from an unknown black limousine pulled to a slow, deliberate halt outside the private gates of her building thirty floors below.
