Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Cup

David lunged forward and opened ledger number three, rapidly flipping the pages until he reached page forty-two.
Taped inside was a certified laboratory report from an independent private clinic in Zurich, dated six days before my father died.
"My God," David whispered, scanning the numbers. "Arsenic trioxide. Micro-doses over an eighteen-month period."
My heart stopped beating. "Mom didn't just steal the money. She... she poisoned him."
"Your father knew he was dying," David realized, his voice trembling with horror. "He was documenting his own murder. He knew if he confronted them directly, they would destroy the evidence before he could finish the legal transfer of assets to you. That's why Vanessa stole this chest yesterday morning. Eleanor must have realized the private lab report was hidden inside it!"
The realization hit me like a physical blow. The pencil in my ear. The frantic cover-up. The attempt to put me behind bars with a felony conviction. It wasn't just about greed or petty jealousy.
It was a cover-up for a calculated, slow-motion homicide.
Suddenly, David’s phone rang on the desk. He answered it on speaker.
"Vance here."
"David, it's Detective Miller," the detective's urgent voice blared through the speaker. "Where are you and Emily right now?"

"We're at the Elm Street residence. Miller, we found something catastrophic in the victim's chest. Evidence of—"
"Get out of that house immediately!" Miller shouted over the line, sirens wailing in the background. "Eleanor Vance just posted emergency cash bail through a third-party bondsman five minutes ago before my hold order went through! She commandeered an unregistered vehicle from the holding facility lot! Her GPS tracker was just cut—she’s heading toward Elm Street!"
