Chapter 4 - Blood Money

The county holding cell smelled of bleach, stale sweat, and despair. I spent the night huddled on a concrete slab, unable to lie on my right side because of the excruciating pressure in my ear. Every time I drifted into fitful sleep, I saw Vanessa’s eyes again—that chilling, psychotic smirk right before she thrust the pencil forward.

At eight-thirty the next morning, two female bailiffs chained my wrists to a belly band and led me into Courtroom 4B.

The gallery was nearly empty, save for two women sitting in the front row.

My mother, Eleanor, sat wearing an elegant black dress, clutching a lace handkerchief to her eyes. Beside her was Vanessa. My sister wore an oversized cream sweater with sterile white bandages wrapped meticulously around both of her forearms. She looked fragile. Innocent. Like an angel who had barely survived a demon's attack.

When Vanessa caught my eye, she didn't look terrified. She leaned slightly toward our mother and allowed a tiny, razor-sharp smile to curve the corner of her lips. She mouthed two words across the oak divider:

*You're done.*

"State of California versus Emily Jane Vance," the court clerk droned as Judge Harrison took the bench.

The prosecutor, a fierce woman named Miller, stepped forward immediately. "Your Honor, the State requests bail be set at one hundred thousand dollars cash only. The defendant attacked her younger sister with an eight-inch chef's knife over a disputed personal loan. As seen in the arrest report, the victim sustained multiple lacerations while defending her life, and the defendant's own mother witnessed the unprovoked violence."

"That is an absolute fabrication, Your Honor," David Vance’s voice cut through the room like a scalpel. He stood tall beside me, unfazed by the prosecutor's posturing. "My client is the victim of a heinous, premeditated ambush. She suffered a perforated eardrum and traumatic acoustic nerve damage caused by a foreign object driven into her ear by the alleged victim, Vanessa Vance."

Judge Harrison frowned, adjusting his spectacles. "Mr. Vance, the police report clearly indicates a knife was recovered at the scene with blood residue."

"A knife planted by the alleged victim," David shot back, opening his leather briefcase with a crisp snap. "And we are prepared to prove that not only was the defendant unarmed, but that the prosecution’s star witnesses have engaged in grand larceny, conspiracy, and evidence tampering."

In the front row, Eleanor stiffened. Her handkerchief dropped into her lap. Vanessa’s smug smile vanished into thin air.
