Chapter 11 - The Sealed Vault

Three months passed. The Elm Street house was finally peaceful.

I had completely renovated the kitchen, tearing down the counters where Vanessa had attacked me and replacing the dark wood with bright, sunlit marble. The criminal trials were progressing smoothly toward Eleanor’s life sentence, and for the first time since my father died, I could sleep through the night.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, a courier arrived at my front gate in an armored transport van.

"Emily Vance?" the courier asked, holding an electronic signature clipboard.

"Yes."

"I have a scheduled delivery from the First National Depository of Geneva. Instructions left by Robert Vance stipulate delivery precisely ninety days following the final resolution of probate."

My heart skipped a beat. "Another delivery?"

The man wheeled a heavy, fireproof titanium lockbox into my foyer, handed me a single brass key sealed in an unbroken wax envelope, and departed.

David arrived twenty minutes later after I called him. Together, we stood in the brightly lit foyer, staring down at the mysterious titanium container.

"Your father never mentioned a second vault," David murmured, checking the Swiss customs declarations. "The paperwork says this was placed in deep storage eight years ago. Long before the embezzlement started. Long before he was poisoned."

With a trembling hand, I broke the wax seal, inserted the heavy brass key into the lockbox, and turned it.

A heavy *click* resonated through the room.

I lifted the lid.

Inside there was no money. No ledgers. No gold.

Instead, resting on a bed of dark velvet, lay a pristine, unopened birth certificate, a faded hospital photograph of two newborn twin babies, and a handwritten letter from my father dated twenty-four years ago.

I picked up the letter and began to read aloud:

*"Emily... if you are opening this, Eleanor is in prison, and you believe you know the whole truth. But you don't. The woman you call your mother is not Eleanor Vance. The real Eleanor—your biological mother—died the day you and your twin sister were born in that clinic in Zurich. The woman in prison is Eleanor's twin sister, Margaret. And Vanessa is not Margaret's child.*

*Vanessa is your stolen twin. And the real Margaret is still out there, waiting for the money."*

A cold shiver crawled down my spine.

Before David could speak, my cell phone buzzed violently on the marble table.

It was an unknown number from a secure international line.

I tapped speaker with a shaking finger. "Hello?"

A voice whispered through the phone—a voice that sounded identical to my mother's, but colder, clearer, and utterly devoid of fear:

May you like

*"Did you really think the woman they arrested was me, Emily? Thank you for liquidating the trust. I'll be coming home to collect it tonight."*

The line went dead.
