Chapter 7 - The Secret Ledger

Two hours later, after an emergency physician at the university medical center cleaned and repacked my ear canal—warning me that I had suffered a forty-percent permanent hearing loss on my right side—David drove me to the family home.
A court-appointed locksmith met us at the front door of the Elm Street house. The place was eerily quiet. Yellow police tape was still crumpled in the hallway wastebasket from the previous day's botched investigation.
"Detective Miller executed a search warrant on Vanessa’s vehicle an hour ago," David explained as we walked into the study. "They found the mahogany chest hidden in the spare tire compartment beneath her trunk."
The chest sat on my father’s old oak desk. Its brass lock had been pried open by the police forensics team, but the contents remained intact.
Inside lay three thick, black leather-bound ledgers, a manila envelope, and a thumb drive labeled *EMILY — ONLY*.
With trembling hands, I plugged the drive into David’s laptop. A single video file appeared on the screen, dated two weeks before my father’s sudden passing from a supposed massive coronary.
My father's face filled the screen. He looked frail, exhausted, but his eyes burned with fierce lucidity.
*"Emily, my sweet girl,"* his voice sounded through the laptop speakers, cracking with emotion. *"If you are watching this, it means I didn't survive to protect you. And it means Eleanor and Vanessa have made their move."*
I covered my mouth, a sob catching in my throat. "Dad..."
May you like
*"For three years, I discovered that your mother has been systematically embezzling from the company pension fund to feed Vanessa’s mounting gambling debts in Reno,"* Dad explained on the screen. *"Over two million dollars is gone. When I threatened to turn the evidence over to the federal authorities, Eleanor told me she would destroy you. She said she would frame you for the financial discrepancies, using your forged signature on the shell corporations."*
Dad leaned closer to the camera, his hand visibly shaking. *"I changed my will. Everything—the house, the remaining trust of three million dollars, the commercial real estate—goes entirely to you, Emily. But I knew they would try to kill me, or destroy you. If I die under suspicious circumstances, look at ledger number three, page forty-two. Check the toxicology panel they buried."*
