Chapter 10 - Justice and Peace

Six months later, justice was formally served.
In a crowded courtroom, Vanessa Miller was sentenced to seven years in federal prison for conspiracy and corporate embezzlement. Stripped of her designer clothes, wearing a plain orange jumpsuit with her hair unstyled, she looked small, hollow, and utterly defeated. Marcus Vance received eleven years.
Our mother had relocated to a small, rundown apartment two states away, surviving on a meager pension, abandoned by every high-society acquaintance who had once filled her lavish parlors. She never called again.
On a brilliant Saturday afternoon in September, the garden behind Graham’s private estate was filled with the sounds of laughter. There were no cameras, no socialites, and no political maneuvers. Only a small gathering of genuine friends, including the teachers from my new school and Graham’s father, Arthur, who sat beneath the oak tree playing chess with Lily.
Graham stood beside me at the edge of the stone terrace, his arm resting gently around my waist. The ring on my finger wasn't an ostentatious diamond meant to impress reporters, but a simple, exquisite sapphire band that matched Lily’s necklace.
"Are you happy, Claire?" Graham asked, kissing the crown of my head as the afternoon breeze rustled the leaves.
"More than I ever thought possible," I whispered, leaning against his shoulder. "For eight years, I thought I was broken beyond repair. But Lily gave me the courage to see the truth. And you gave us a home."
Lily ran across the lawn, holding up a drawing she had just finished with Arthur. "Mommy! Graham! Look! I drew our new family!"

On the textured paper were four figures: Lily, me, Graham, and a large golden retriever we had adopted from the rescue shelter the previous month. Beneath the figures, written in Lily’s bold, eight-year-old handwriting, were the words: *The Truth Keeps Us Safe.*
Graham laughed, scooping Lily up into his arms and spinning her around until her giggles echoed across the rolling green lawn. The nightmare had ended. The shadows had vanished, and the future was brighter than anything we could have ever dreamed.
