Chapter 8 - Retribution

Over the next forty-eight hours, the legal hammer of the Sterling family fell with terrifying precision.
Arthur Sterling pulled every line of credit extended to my father’s logistics firm. Deprived of the Sterling financial shield, the company collapsed into immediate bankruptcy. The sprawling suburban mansion where my mother reigned like an untouchable queen was seized by creditors by Friday afternoon.
Local news stations broadcasted footage of moving vans parked in my parents' circular driveway, workers carrying out Eleanor’s antique furniture and designer wardrobes under the supervision of court marshals.
Vanessa’s lavish penthouse, which had been leased under Graham’s corporate account, had its locks changed while she was attempting to hide at a luxury hotel downtown. When she tried to access her personal savings, she discovered that the state attorney’s financial crimes division had frozen every account connected to Marcus Vance.
I watched the evening news in our living room while Lily slept peacefully in the adjacent bedroom. On screen, a reporter stood outside the county courthouse.
"Marcus Vance was taken into custody earlier today on charges of grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit securities manipulation," the journalist announced. "Sources close to the investigation state that socialite Vanessa Miller is being questioned as a person of interest, with formal charges expected by early next week."
My phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was an unknown number, but when I answered, my mother’s voice came through the receiver, hoarse and trembling with tears.
"Claire... please," Eleanor wept, all of her pride and venom stripped away. "They took the house. They took my car. Vanessa is locking herself in a cheap motel room, threatening to end her life. You have to speak to Graham. Tell him to drop the charges. Tell him we're family! He listens to you!"
I listened to the woman who had spent my entire childhood telling me I wasn't pretty enough, smart enough, or worthy of love. I remembered her laughter when Vanessa spilled wine on my dress at the rehearsal dinner. I remembered her raised hand when Lily tried to speak.
"Family protects each other, Eleanor," I said, calling her by her first name for the first time in my life. "You chose Vanessa. And Vanessa chose greed. You made your bed. Now you have to sleep in it."

"Claire! Don't hang up! Claire—!"
I pressed the red icon and permanently blocked the number.
