Chapter 2 - The Echo in the Grand Ballroom

The ballroom fell into a silence so absolute that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a roar. On the twenty-foot projection screen behind the sweetheart table, the video flickered once before sharpening into terrifying clarity. The footage had been captured from a low angle, partially concealed behind the heavy silk drapes of the bridal suite.
There was Vanessa, clad in her fifty-thousand-dollar custom gown, laughing carelessly while holding a flute of champagne. Standing inches from her was not Graham, but Marcus Vance—Graham’s closest business associate and childhood friend.
"Are you sure the prenup loophole is airtight?" Marcus’s voice resonated through the acoustic speakers, crisp and undeniable.
"Of course it is," Vanessa’s voice purred back. She leaned against Marcus with an intimacy that was impossible to misunderstand. "Graham thinks he’s marrying a sweet, devoted charity director. He has no idea the offshore trust will automatically transfer thirty percent of the tech holdings to my private account within six months of marriage. Once the funds clear, we trigger the lifestyle clause and walk away with half his empire."
Marcus smirked on the high-definition display, pulling Vanessa in for a kiss that lingered far too long. "And your sister? That little teacher who crashed your rehearsal dinner?"
Vanessa let out a cruel, mocking laugh that cut through the silent ballroom like broken glass. "Claire is pathetic. I made sure Mom kept her in the basement of our family hierarchy. I only invited her today so everyone could see the contrast—me as royalty, and her looking like a charity case in off-the-rack clearance. She’s completely broken. She won’t ever suspect a thing."
A collective gasp swept through the five hundred guests. Diamond necklaces sparkled as society matrons recoiled in horror. Waiters froze in their tracks, trays of champagne balanced precariously on their fingertips.
Beside me, my mother, Eleanor, looked as if all the blood had been drained from her face. Her hand, which had been raised to strike Lily’s shoulder moments before, hung suspended in mid-air.
"Shut it off!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking into shrill hysteria. She gathered the heavy skirts of her gown and lunged toward the AV booth. "It’s fake! It’s AI! Someone hacked the projector!"
"Don’t you touch that console," a voice commanded.
It wasn't loud, but it possessed the kind of authority that halted Vanessa dead in her tracks. Graham had stepped forward. The gentle, warm smile he had worn throughout the ceremony was entirely gone. His posture was rigid, his eyes cold as arctic ice as he watched his bride on screen giggling while Marcus whispered details of an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
Graham slowly turned his head toward Marcus, who was standing near the third VIP table, looking desperately toward the emergency exits.

"Nobody leaves this room," Graham said calmly, motioning to the private security guards posted at every double door. Then, he looked at my trembling daughter. "Lily, sweetheart. Did you film this yourself?"
Lily stepped closer to my side, her small hand clutching my fingers so tightly her knuckles turned white. "Yes, Uncle Graham. I was looking for my silver hairpin behind the curtains. I heard Aunt Vanessa saying she was going to ruin your life. You bought me that ice cream when my shoes broke. You were nice to Mommy. I couldn't let them hurt you."
