Chapter 7 - The Hidden Compartment

Tears spilled over my lashes as the full magnitude of Vanessa’s depravity hit me. She hadn't just mocked me; she hadn't just humiliated me at her rehearsal dinner or placed me at the staff table. She had engineered a scheme that would have stripped me of my freedom and torn Lily away from me forever.

"Why?" I choked out. "Why would my own sister do something so evil?"

"Jealousy takes many forms, Claire," a deep voice came from the open doorway.

Graham stood on the threshold. He had abandoned his formal wedding tuxedo for a dark sweater and jeans, but the intensity in his dark eyes remained unchanged. He stepped inside, nodding politely to Evelyn, who stood up to give him room.

Lily’s eyes lit up. "Uncle Graham!"

"Hey there, detective," Graham smiled, walking over and kneeling down beside Lily’s chair. He pulled a small, beautifully wrapped box from his coat pocket and handed it to her. "A little reward for the bravest girl I know."

Lily looked at me for permission. When I nodded, she eagerly untied the ribbon. Inside was a delicate silver chain holding a tiny pendant shaped like a video camera, with a tiny, genuine sapphire as the lens.

"Thank you!" she beamed, wrapping her small arms around his neck.

Graham hugged her back with genuine warmth before standing to face me. "Claire, we found something else in the suite when we cleared out Vanessa’s belongings."

Evelyn produced a clear evidence bag from her briefcase. Inside was an antique gold locket encrusted with small emeralds—the only heirloom left by my grandmother, which had mysteriously vanished from my jewelry box five years ago. My mother had accused me of being careless, claiming I must have pawned it during my divorce.

"Vanessa had it hidden inside the false lining of her vanity case," Graham said quietly. "Along with your original college diploma and three letters of recommendation that went missing from your teaching portfolio four years ago. She was methodically sabotaging your career prospects for years."

The realization hit me like a physical blow. The prestigious private school that had rejected my application without explanation... the state teaching grant that had vanished... it had all been orchestrated by my own family.

"Graham, I don't know what to say," I murmured, my voice shaking with raw emotion. "I knew they favored her, but I never believed they could be this monstrous."

"They are parasites, Claire," Graham said, his tone resolute. "And their reign over your life ends today."
