Chapter 9 - The Fall of Vance

Twenty-four hours later, the world woke up to one of the biggest corporate scandals in modern American history.

Every major news network—CNN, Bloomberg, CNBC—was broadcasting the same breaking story. The headline flashed in bold red letters across the bottom of the screens: **BILLIONAIRE RAYMOND VANCE ARRESTED FOR CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT CAPITAL MURDER AND CORPORATE TREASON.**

From my bed in the hospital’s newly reinforced VIP penthouse suite, I watched the television broadcast. Marcus sat on the edge of the mattress, his arm wrapped around my shoulders, while our tiny son, named Leo Marcus Sterling, slept peacefully against my chest in a soft cotton swaddle. Leo was small, requiring careful monitoring, but the pediatric team had officially declared him completely out of danger.

On the screen, live footage showed Raymond Vance being led out of federal court in handcuffs, flanked by US Marshals. His expensive bespoke suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his face sunken with humiliating defeat. Reporters swarmed him, shoving microphones into his face.

*"Mr. Vance! Did you hire Isabella Cross to murder your nephew's wife?"*

*"Did you sabotage Marcus Sterling's vehicle six months ago?"*

Raymond attempted to hide his face behind his cuffed hands, but the flashing cameras captured every ounce of his disgrace.

The screen cut to the Manhattan District Attorney standing at a podium. *"The state has uncovered an extensive paper trail, offshore payment records, and incontrovertible audio-video evidence. Isabella Cross has entered a full guilty plea in exchange for testifying against Raymond Vance. Both individuals face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."*

Marcus switched off the television with the remote, tossing it onto the bedside table. He looked down at me, his eyes overflowing with warmth and tenderness.

"It's over," he murmured, gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. "They will never touch us again. I’ve restructured the entire board of Sterling Enterprises. Every single ally Raymond had has been purged. The company is completely secure, and it belongs entirely to our family."

I leaned my head against his broad shoulder, closing my eyes as the gentle rise and fall of Leo's breathing warmed my heart. "We made it, Marcus. Against everything, we made it."

"Because of you," Marcus whispered, kissing the top of my head. "You saved him on that floor, Khloe. You are the heart of this family."
