Chapter 8 - Defying the Odds

Under the focused beams of Marcus’s lights, Dr. Campbell and her surgical assistant worked with breathtaking speed. The room was freezing, devoid of the steady hum of central ventilation, but nobody paused.

"Suction," Dr. Campbell commanded. "I have the head. Khloe, you’re going to feel a brief tugging sensation."

Marcus kept one hand firmly locked around mine, while his other arm held the tactical light perfectly steady above the surgical field. He looked down into my eyes, his jaw clenched, pouring every ounce of his strength into me.

"Almost there, my love," he whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "Our boy is coming."

A second later, Dr. Campbell lifted a tiny, slick form into the beam of light.

For two agonizing heartbeats, there was no sound. My breath caught in my throat. I stared into the darkness above, praying with every shred of my soul.

Then, cutting through the heavy silence of the blacked-out room, came a sharp, indignant wail.

*WAAAAAH.*

Tears burst from my eyes, hot and overwhelming. The sound of our son’s voice was the sweetest music I had ever heard.

"He's breathing on his own!" the pediatrician announced, wrapping the tiny infant in sterile warm blankets under the auxiliary battery heat lamp. "Apgar score is eight. Strong lungs, healthy heartbeat. He’s small, but he’s a fighter, Mr. Sterling."

Marcus leaned down and kissed me passionately, his tears mixing with mine on my cheeks. "He’s here, Khloe. Our son is here."

Suddenly, the mechanical groan of the emergency generators echoed from deep within the hospital’s foundations. The overhead surgical lamps flickered once, twice, and roared back to full brightness.

The double doors of the operating room burst open. Four armed tactical officers rushed in, followed by Detective Miller.

"Room is secure!" Miller announced, lowering his weapon. "We intercepted Raymond’s operative in the basement trying to sabotage the secondary circuit. He’s in custody. And Raymond Vance was just apprehended at Teterboro Airport trying to board a private jet to Dubai."

Marcus slowly stood up, turning toward the officers. His eyes were completely dry now, replaced by the lethal, calculating authority of a king who had just reclaimed his throne.

"Ensure Raymond is placed in solitary confinement," Marcus said coldly. "And tell his lawyers that if they attempt to file for bail, I will buy every firm representing them and dismantle them by sunrise."
