Chapter 2 - The Lens of Truth

Marcus didn’t waste another second on Isabella. He dropped to his knees beside me, his hands shaking violently as he scooped me off the freezing marble.

"Khloe! Look at me, sweetheart, look at me," he pleaded, his deep voice cracking with pure terror. His palms hovered over my swollen belly, terrified that even a touch might cause harm. "Are you bleeding? Where does it hurt?"

"The baby... Marcus, she pushed me, and then she—she tried to crush..." My voice gave out into a ragged sob. Every muscle in my abdomen was clenched in a tight, burning knot.

Behind us, Isabella scrambled backward, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her eyes were still locked onto the ceiling. The tiny red LED pulsed with mechanical indifference, recording every twitch of her guilty face. She knew what that camera meant. It wasn’t just a regular hospital monitor; it was part of Marcus’s private security grid, wired directly into his company’s cloud servers.

"Marcus, please," Isabella stammered, backing toward the heavy wooden door. Her designer dress was rumpled, her face streaked with sweat. "You don't understand the context. She insulted me, she provoked me! I tripped, and my shoe just landed near her—"

"Shut your mouth!" Marcus bellowed without turning around. He pressed the red emergency buzzer on the wall with the heel of his hand, holding it down until an alarm began wailing down the corridor. "Security! Get the chief of medicine in here NOW!"

Isabella saw her window. She lunged toward the open doorway, her red heels skidding on the polished floor. But just as her hand reached the brass handle, two hulking hospital guards rounded the corner, flanked by my primary OB-GYN, Dr. Campbell.

"Stop her," Marcus commanded, his tone dropping from frantic husband to ruthless billionaire in a fraction of a second. "Do not let that woman leave this room. If she takes one step past that threshold, break her legs."

The guards instantly blocked the doorway, grabbing Isabella’s arms. She shrieked, thrashing against their grip like a wild animal. "Get your filthy hands off me! Do you know who my father is? Marcus, tell them to let me go!"

Marcus didn't even look at her. He lifted me effortlessly into his arms and gently laid me onto the elevated hospital bed. Dr. Campbell rushed to my side with a portable fetal Doppler, her face pale.

"Khloe, breathe with me," Dr. Campbell urged, tearing open my hospital gown to place the cold ultrasound probe against my stomach.

The silence that followed stretched like an eternity. For three agonizing seconds, the only sound was the static of the machine. Then, through the small speaker, came the rapid, rhythmic *thump-thump-thump* of our baby’s heartbeat.

A guttural sob broke from Marcus’s chest. He buried his face against my forehead, kissing my temples over and over. "He's alive. Thank God. Thank God."

While the doctor adjusted the monitors, my gaze drifted to the floor where I had fallen. Lying half-hidden under the ruffled edge of the bedside table was a small, transparent plastic cylinder. It was a pre-filled medical syringe with the safety cap removed.

Isabella hadn't just kicked me. She had come into my room with a weapon.
