Chapter 6 - Chloe’s Betrayal

The air in the courtroom felt charged with electricity. Julian’s hands were trembling violently on the table. He turned toward Hayes, but Hayes had pushed his chair back several inches, subtly distancing himself from his radioactive client.

"Your Honor," Hayes said quietly, looking down at his legal pad. "In light of these... unprecedented disclosures, I must formally request a recess to consult with my client, and potentially petition to withdraw as counsel."

"Motion denied," Judge Thorne fired back without hesitation. "We are finishing this hearing today."

From the back row, Chloe was weeping hysterically. "He has a safety deposit box!" she shouted, completely ignoring the bailiff beside her. "At First National Bank on 4th Street! Box 402! The second passport is in there! He bought fake papers for him and Maya last month!"

The entire courtroom gasped.

Julian lunged out of his chair toward the gallery. "You miserable traitor!"

"Deputies, restrain him!" Judge Thorne commanded.

Two bailiffs moved with terrifying speed, grabbing Julian by his shoulders and forcing him down onto the table. Julian struggled against the wood, his cheek pressed flat against the mahogany surface, his perfectly styled hair falling wildly across his forehead.

"You're done, Vance," one officer grunted, clicking steel handcuffs around Julian’s wrists with a sickening, metallic click.

Maya didn't cry. She sat on her booster seat, watching the man who had terrified her for months being pinned down like a common criminal. She reached out and took Sarah’s hand, then looked across the room directly into my eyes.

The terror that had haunted my daughter's face for ninety days began to dissolve, replaced by the first faint glimmer of safety.

"Let the record reflect," Judge Thorne stated, her voice shaking with righteous fury, "that the respondent, Julian Vance, has attempted physical violence in this courtroom, has committed blatant perjury, and has introduced fraudulent evidence to subvert the court."

The judge looked at the county prosecutor who happened to be seated in the gallery waiting for the next docket.

"Counselor Wright," Judge Thorne said. "Are you seeing this?"

District Attorney Wright stood up from the gallery, buttoning his coat. "Every second of it, Your Honor. My office is already preparing warrants for custodial interference, perjury, forgery, and grand larceny."
