Chapter 3 - The Frozen Courtroom

Before Julian could stand up, Sarah, the child advocate, gently guided Maya’s hands as the little girl unzipped a hidden seam at the base of the stuffed animal’s neck. Out slid a miniature micro-SD card attached to an ultra-thin USB adapter—professional surveillance equipment.

"Your Honor, this is completely out of order!" Julian shouted, abandoning all courtroom decorum as he surged to his feet. "This is an invasion of privacy! Clara planted that! She coached her!"

"Sit down, Mr. Vance!" Judge Thorne’s gavel struck the sound block with a crack that sounded like a gunshot. "One more outburst and you will spend the afternoon in a holding cell for contempt."

"Julian, darling, sit," Evelyn hissed from behind him, though her own face had drained of color.

The judge turned to the court clerk. "Plug the drive into the court monitor. Let's see what the child is referring to."

Hayes looked like he was about to choke on his silk tie. "Your Honor, chain of custody—"

"Overruled. This is a custody determination hearing where the child's welfare is paramount. Screen it."

The flat-screen television mounted to the wall flickered to life. A timestamp in the lower-right corner showed a date from three weeks prior—a Friday evening when Julian had claimed I had broken into his downtown condo, screamed threats, and thrown wine glasses at him, an incident that formed the cornerstone of his emergency restraining order against me.

The video footage was crystal clear, shot from the vantage point of the living room bookshelf where Barnaby had been positioned.

The screen showed Julian sitting on his leather sofa, completely calm, swirling a glass of scotch. Beside him sat Chloe.

*"Are you sure the doctor signed off on the fake psychiatric evaluation?"* Chloe’s voice came through the courtroom speakers, crisp and undeniable.

Julian laughed, a low, cold sound that sent shivers down my spine. *"Dr. Aris owes me two hundred grand from his offshore losses. He wrote whatever I told him to write. By next month, Clara will be legally declared incompetent. The trust fund my grandfather left for Maya will default entirely to me as sole legal guardian."*

On screen, Chloe smiled and leaned into him, resting her hand on his chest. *"And what about the police report? What if Clara has an alibi for tonight?"*

Julian smirked, taking a sip of scotch. *"She’s at home with her phone turned off because I had the carrier suspend her service. Watch this."*

In the video, Julian calmly stood up, walked over to the dining table, picked up a full glass of red wine, and deliberately hurled it against the white wall. He then grabbed a heavy decorative vase, smashed it across his own forearm to create a bloody scrape, and tore his shirt collar.

*"Call the precinct,"* Julian said in the video, breathing heavily on purpose. *"Tell them my hysterical wife just attacked me and fled."*

Silence swallowed the courtroom. It was so total, so suffocating, that you could hear the hum of the fluorescent lights overhead.
