Chapter 11 - The Shadow in the Mirror

Two weeks later, the dust had begun to settle, though the legal fallout continued to dominate the local headlines. Julian was being held without bail at the county detention facility, facing a mountain of state and federal indictments. Evelyn had fled to a private clinic in Switzerland, hiding behind high walls to avoid subpoenas.
I had rented a charming, sunlit two-bedroom bungalow in an older, quiet neighborhood thirty miles away from the city. The garden was overrun with honeysuckle, and Maya had her own bedroom with walls we spent the weekend painting lavender.
It was a rainy Tuesday evening. The sound of water tapping gently against the bay windows brought a cozy, peaceful rhythm to the living room. Maya was already asleep in her bed, her breathing slow and steady, Barnaby tucked under her arm.
I sat at the kitchen counter with a cup of chamomile tea, scrolling through an email from my former accounting firm. They had offered me my senior partner position back, complete with a signing bonus that would easily secure Maya’s college fund. Everything was falling into place.
Then, my phone buzzed on the counter.
It was an unknown number with a restricted caller ID.
I hesitated, thinking it might be DA Wright with an update on Julian’s plea negotiations. I swiped the screen. "Hello?"
Silence met my ear. Heavy, rhythmic breathing.
"Who is this?" I asked, my voice tightening.
A distorted, electronically altered voice whispered through the receiver: *"Did you really think Julian was smart enough to build shell corporations across five continents by himself, Clara?"*
My blood turned to ice. "Julian is behind bars. If this is one of his associates, I'm tracing this call to the district attorney."
A low, mocking chuckle echoed through the phone.
*"Julian was a puppet. An arrogant, sloppy puppet who outlived his usefulness. But you... you proved yourself far more capable than we anticipated. You uncovered accounts that weren't meant to be found."*
My heart slammed against my ribs. "What are you talking about?"
*"Look inside Barnaby, Clara. Not the USB drive your clever little girl gave the judge. The second chip. Deep inside the chest cavity."*
The line went dead with a click.
My hands shook violently as I set the tea down. I walked swiftly down the hallway into Maya’s bedroom. The nightlight cast a soft purple glow over her sleeping face.
Carefully, holding my breath so I wouldn't wake her, I slid the pink stuffed rabbit from under her arm.
I carried Barnaby into the kitchen, grabbed a small pair of sewing scissors from the drawer, and felt along the rabbit’s torso. My fingers pressed into the synthetic stuffing.
Deep in the center of the rabbit’s chest, sewn into a stiff protective pouch where no child could ever accidentally feel it, was a second, tiny object.
I snipped the heavy thread and reached inside.
My fingers pulled out a solid black micro-drive, stamped with a crimson insignia I had never seen before. Taped to the back of the drive was a folded piece of paper with a handwritten message in ink that was fresh.

I unfolded the paper. Written across the center in elegant, unmistakable cursive was a single sentence:
*He was never Maya's real father. Run.*
