Chapter 4 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Julian stood frozen, his eyes wide with sheer terror. His face had gone from pale to an ashen, sickly gray.

Chloe slumped down in her seat in the gallery, frantically pulling her designer sunglasses over her eyes, trying to disappear into the upholstery.

"Turn it off," Julian croaked, looking at Hayes. "Richard, turn it off!"

"Your Honor..." Hayes began, his voice trembling. For a man who charged eight hundred dollars an hour to bully vulnerable spouses, he suddenly looked like a schoolboy caught with stolen exam papers. "I... I was entirely unaware of this footage."

"I have no doubt about that, Mr. Hayes," Judge Thorne said, her voice dropping into an icy register that promised devastation. "Because if you had been aware, you would already be facing disbarment and criminal indictment for subornation of perjury."

Judge Thorne turned her piercing gaze upon Julian Vance. The charming, wealthy heir to Vance Logistics had shrunk inside his designer suit.

"Daddy told me that if I gave Barnaby to Uncle Mark, Mommy would go away forever," Maya’s soft voice broke through the stillness. She looked down at her lap. "He told me to tell the judge that Mommy hit me. But Mommy never hits me. Daddy told me bad lies."

"Maya, baby, no—Daddy loves you!" Evelyn cried out from the gallery, lunging toward the swinging wooden gate that separated spectators from the well of the court. "Your Honor, this is a horrific misunderstanding! My son is an honorable man!"

"Bailiff! Remove that woman from my courtroom immediately!" Judge Thorne roared.

Two armed deputies stepped forward, taking Evelyn firmly by her arms. The pearls at her throat bounced as she violently struggled against them. "Un بتاع me! Do you know who I am? Do you know who my family is?!"

"You are currently a spectator being removed for contempt of court, Mrs. Vance," the judge said without looking up. "Take her out."

As Evelyn was dragged through the double doors, screaming obscenities that shattered her pristine country-club facade, Judge Thorne turned to me.

"Mrs. Vance. You indicated earlier that you wished to present evidence regarding your husband’s financial standing and his allegations that you squandered marital assets."

I stood up. I smoothed down my navy skirt. For three months, I had been starved of my child, painted as a lunatic, and stripped of every dollar to my name.

"Yes, Your Honor," I said, my voice steady, calm, and clear. "I have prepared an independent forensic analysis."

Julian looked at me, his eyes filled with venom. But underneath the hatred, I saw the truth: he finally remembered who I had been before I gave up my career to protect his ego.
