Chapter 9 - The New Will

Before I could pack our luggage to return to the airport, Arthur Whitmore requested my presence in his private wing.

The billionaire sat behind his desk, looking frail for the first time in his life. The sheer shock of the betrayal had aged him ten years in twenty-four hours. On the desk lay a thick stack of legal documents tied with blue ribbon.

“Evelyn,” he said, gesturing to the leather chair opposite him. “Sit.”

I sat, keeping my spine straight. “If this is another settlement offer, Arthur, you can save the paper. My boutique investment firm in Geneva manages over two hundred million dollars. I built it without a single dollar of your family’s money. I don't need your wealth to give my children an extraordinary life.”

Arthur smiled faintly, a dry, tired smile. “I know. I had my Swiss operatives run a background check on you yesterday evening. You turned down every luxury grant Julian tried to funnel through third-party trusts. You are ten times the strategist my nephew ever dreamed of being.”

He pushed the documents toward me.

“This is my revised last will and testament,” Arthur said bluntly. “It places sixty percent of the Whitmore conglomerate directly into an irrevocable trust for Noah, Ethan, Grace, and Lily. But there is a condition.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Whitmore men never give without strings.”

“You are the sole trustee,” Arthur stated, ignoring my jab. “Not Julian. You have absolute veto power over the board of directors until the eldest child turns twenty-five. But to activate the trust, you must reside on the East Coast for six months of the year. My grandchildren will not grow up foreign to their heritage.”

I looked at the documents, then back at the formidable patriarch. “And Julian?”

“Julian needs to rebuild himself from the ground up,” Arthur replied coldly. “He failed as a husband. He failed as an executive when he let Donald orchestrate this farce. If he wants back into this family’s future, he will earn it through you. You hold his redemption in your hands, Evelyn.”

It was the ultimate power reversal. The patriarch who had discarded me like trash was now handing me the keys to his entire dynasty.

“I’ll agree to four months a year,” I said smoothly, sliding the contract back toward him. “In a private residence of my choosing, paid for by the trust, entirely separate from the Whitmore main estate. And Julian sees them only on a supervised schedule until he proves his stability.”

Arthur stared at me for three long seconds. Then, he picked up his gold fountain pen. “Agreed.”
