Chapter 3 - The Swab and the Slander

Within fifteen minutes, the opulent gardens were emptied of onlookers, leaving only security guards stationed at every iron perimeter gate. The lavish floral arches stood abandoned under the afternoon sun. Inside Arthur Whitmore’s mahogany-paneled library, the atmosphere felt less like a celebration and more like a high-stakes courtroom.
The four children were nestled on a leather Chesterfield sofa, quietly coloring in books Rachel had packed in my bag. Julian hadn’t taken his eyes off them. He hovered three feet away, his broad shoulders hunched, looking as if the foundation of his entire reality had cracked down the middle.
“This is extortion!” Vanessa shrieked, pacing before the unlit hearth. Her lace veil was torn off, her hair disheveled. “Arthur, you know her! Evelyn grew up poor! She resented this family from the moment she married Julian! She couldn't give him an heir for three years, and now she miraculously shows up with four? She faked the Swiss clinic paperwork!”
“The paperwork comes from the University Hospital of Zurich,” I said, sitting gracefully across from Arthur, refusing to show an ounce of fatigue. “Certified by the international medical board and sealed by the Swiss federal department. The DNA was cross-referenced with Julian’s public genetic profile submitted during his stem-cell foundation launch.”
“Shut up! Just shut up!” Vanessa turned on me, her eyes bloodshot. “You ruined my wedding!”
“Enough!” Arthur slammed his palm onto the mahogany desk. The crack sounded like a gunshot. The room instantly fell into a dead silence.
Arthur Whitmore had not built an international shipping and real estate empire by being a fool. He stood tall, his cold eyes sweeping over Vanessa with a chilling calculation.
“Dr. Marcus is already en route from St. Jude’s Memorial,” Arthur said coldly, his voice devoid of warmth. “He is bringing three independent genetic technicians. He will take blood samples from Julian, from Evelyn’s four children, and from your three sons, Vanessa.”
“Blood samples?” Vanessa gasped, her voice cracking. “Arthur, they are babies! You can't subject my boys to needles just because an abandoned ex-wife wants revenge! Julian, tell your father! Protect your sons!”
She lunged toward Julian, grabbing his lapels, pleading into his face. For years, Vanessa’s tears had been Julian’s ultimate weakness. They were the reason he had abandoned me in that sterile lawyer's office two years ago.
Julian looked down at her. But this time, his eyes weren't filled with protective affection. They were dark, stormy, and clouded with a creeping, nauseating realization.

“Why are you crying, Vanessa?” Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low. “If they are my sons... a blood test only proves your innocence. It guarantees them hundreds of millions in trust funds. Why are you begging me to stop it?”
Vanessa froze, her fingers slowly slipping from his tuxedo jacket.
