Chapter 5 - Vanessa’s Desperate Move

By midnight, the estate felt like a pressure cooker ready to detonate. The children were fast asleep in the guest suites under the watchful eye of Rachel, whom I had flown in with me.
I walked down the dark marble corridor toward the library to fetch a bottle of warm water for Lily when a frantic whisper caught my attention from the service pantry.
The door was cracked an inch. A sliver of amber light spilled across the polished oak floor.
“—you don't understand, Donald!” Vanessa’s panicked voice hissed through the gap. “Arthur brought in St. Jude’s private forensic unit! They’re running a 24-marker autosomal test! It’s going to be ready by morning!”
I froze, stepping into the shadows of the heavy velvet drapery.
“You told me Julian's father would never test them once the birth certificates were filed!” Vanessa sobbed softly, the sound muffled by her sleeve. “You swore you’d handle the family trusts! If Julian finds out... if Arthur finds out what we did... they’ll destroy us! Donald, you have to intercept the courier from LabCorp!”
There was a pause, the metallic hum of the phone receiver buzzing in the quiet room.
“I don't care about the risk!” she snapped, desperation turning her voice venomous. “The boys are yours, Donald! If Arthur cuts us off, we get nothing! Not a single cent of the three hundred million dollar lineage trust!”
My heart hammered violently against my ribs.
Donald.
Donald Whitmore. Julian’s first cousin and Arthur’s chief financial officer. The quiet, calculating nephew who had managed the Whitmore offshore assets for the past decade. The man who had sat silently at the family dinner table every Sunday, watching Julian and me drift apart, watching Vanessa worm her way into the inner circle.
It hadn't just been an affair. It had been a corporate coup.
Vanessa hung up the phone with shaking hands. As she pulled the pantry door open to slip out into the corridor, I stepped out from the shadows, blocking her path.
Vanessa gasped, nearly dropping her phone. She slapped a hand over her mouth, her eyes widening in horror as she met my gaze.
“Donald?” I asked quietly, my voice calm, smooth, and lethal. “You traded Julian’s marriage for a cousin who couldn't even stand up to his uncle in daylight?”

“You heard nothing,” Vanessa hissed, lunging forward to grab my wrist, but I caught her hand mid-air, twisting it firmly until she whimpered and dropped to her knees on the marble floor.
“I heard everything,” I whispered into her ear. “And in less than four hours, the entire world is going to hear it too.”
