Chapter 9 - The Shadow of the Throne

The grand banquet hall of the Alfieri mansion was suffocating with luxury and greed. Golden candelabras cast a warm, deceptive glow over fifty of the most dangerous men and women in the underworld. Crystal flutes of champagne chimed together, punctuated by the raucous laughter of Julian Alfieri, who stood at the head of the banquet table wearing a bespoke three-piece suit that cost more than an average family earned in a year.

By his side, Sienna De Luca was radiant in ruby velvet, her fingers draped over Julian’s arm, proudly displaying the massive emerald ring that Julian had given her earlier that morning—a ring taken straight from the Alfieri family safe.

"To progress!" Julian toasted, raising his glass high to the applause of the Falcone and Moretti capos. "To leaving behind the relics of the past and embracing an empire built for the modern era!"

In the corner of the room, parked like an ornamental antique in the shadows, sat Nico in his high-backed wheelchair. Adeline stood quietly behind him, her hands folded neatly over her apron, her eyes scanning the room with the clinical detachment of a hawk.

Underneath the wool blanket covering Nico's lap, his hands were completely free of restraint. In his pocket rested a suppressed 9mm pistol, and strapped under his trouser leg was a custom carbon-fiber brace designed to lock his right knee into place if the damaged nerve misfired.

Dr. Gould approached the corner, holding a leather folder and a silver fountain pen. The smug physician smelled of expensive cologne and cheap sweat.

"Nurse Vance," Gould murmured under his breath, giving Adeline a condescending pat on the shoulder that made Nico’s jaw tick beneath his blank expression. "You’ve done an adequate job keeping him stable. After tonight's signing, Julian has agreed to give you a generous severance bonus. You won't have to work in this dreary mausoleum anymore."

"You are very kind, Doctor," Adeline said meekly, lowering her eyes. "Is everything ready for the signing?"

"Everything," Gould smiled, flipping open the folder to reveal the power-of-attorney documents that would officially strip Nico of every asset, every dock, and every bank account bearing the Alfieri name. "He just needs to put his thumbprint on the seal. I'll guide his hand."

Julian’s voice boomed across the hall, cutting through the jazz music. "Friends! Honored guests! Before we conclude tonight's feast, we must attend to one final, solemn piece of business. As you all know, my dear brother Nico—struck down in his prime by unfortunate circumstances—has recognized that the weight of the Alfieri Syndicate is too heavy for him to bear."

A theatrical sigh of sorrow rippled through the sycophants. Sienna smirked, raising her glass toward Nico’s corner.

"Bring him to the table," Julian ordered the two towering enforcers standing near the dais.

Adeline pushed the wheelchair forward, her heart pounding a steady, rhythmic battle drum against her ribs. Every eye in the room turned toward them. The capos looked away with uncomfortable grimaces, unable to meet the hollow gaze of the man they had once feared.

Julian leaned over the long table, the legal parchment spread before him, a small ink pad ready for Nico's thumb.

"Just press his thumb here, Gould," Julian instructed casually, not even looking Nico in the eye. "Let’s get this over with so we can open the vintage Barolo."

Gould stepped forward, reaching out to grab Nico’s right limp wrist.

He never touched it.

With the speed of a striking viper, Nico’s hand snapped upward. His fingers closed around Gould’s throat with the force of a hydraulic vice.

The physician’s eyes bulged, a strangled croak tearing from his lips as Nico hauled the grown man forward, slamming his face down onto the mahogany table with a sickening *crack* of shattering crystal.

The entire banquet hall froze. The music died instantly. Champagne flutes paused halfway to open mouths.

"You always had sloppy technique, Doctor," Nico’s voice sliced through the silence like a straight razor. It wasn't the weak slur of an invalid. It was the deep, thunderous baritone of a predator that had broken out of its cage.
