Chapter 5 - The Slap Across the Room

The air in the ballroom went brittle, like thin ice ready to shatter under a single step.
Julian’s face flushed a dark, furious crimson. Councilman Vance cleared his throat nervously, looking away, while several older capos shifted their weight, their hands instinctively moving closer to the inner linings of their suit jackets.
Then, Sienna moved.
She stood abruptly, her emerald gown hissing against the linen table cloth. The sweet, innocent façade she had worn for months melted away in a split second, replaced by pure, venomous rage. Her political ambitions, her carefully constructed timeline for inheriting the Alfieri fortune through Julian, was slipping through her fingers in front of the city's entire underworld.
She rounded the table, stopping directly in front of Nico’s wheelchair.
"You stubborn, pathetic fool," Sienna hissed, her voice loud enough to carry across the breathless silence of the ballroom. "You think you’re being brave? Look at yourself!"
She gestured violently at his chair.
"You’re half a man, Nico! A ghost in an expensive suit! You sit there playing the mafia king while your men laugh behind your back! Julian is keeping this family from eating itself alive, and you’re clinging to pride that burned up in your car eight months ago!"
The disrespect was catastrophic. In the Alfieri syndicate, men had been buried alive in wet concrete for speaking a tenth of those words to the Don.
Nico looked up at her. His face was entirely devoid of emotion, an eerie, terrifying calm settling over his features. "You are finished in this house, Sienna. Pack your things tonight."
"I am the daughter of the ranking councilman!" she shrieked, lost to hysteria and humiliation. "You don't dismiss me! You're nothing without me! You're a cripple who can't even stand up to defend his own honor!"
Blinded by spite, Sienna raised her right hand, her heavy diamond ring catching the chandelier light, and swung her open palm with all her weight directly toward Nico’s face.
A collective gasp sucked the air from the room. A mafia boss struck by his own woman in front of his soldiers was a death sentence to his authority. Because of his paralysis, Nico’s reaction time was hindered, his defensive reflexes slowed by the chair's confines. He braced for the impact, his jaw locking.
The slap never landed.
*Smack!*
The sharp crack of flesh against flesh rang out, but it wasn't the sound of a cheek being struck.
It was the sound of a hand intercepting a strike mid-air.
Adeline stood between Sienna and the wheelchair. Her left hand had shot out like a steel trap, her fingers clamping around Sienna’s wrist with bone-crushing, clinical precision, halting the diamond ring barely two inches from Nico’s cheekbone.
The room froze.
Sienna’s eyes bulged in shock. She pulled violently, but Adeline’s grip was locked in an anatomical pressure hold that immobilized her forearm entirely.
"Let go of me, you filthy little servant!" Sienna shrieked, her face contorting.
Adeline didn't blink. Her stance was rooted, her brown eyes burning with a fierce, protective fire that silenced the entire hall.
"Physical violence against a recovering patient is a felony under Section 240 of the State Penal Code," Adeline said, her voice clear, steady, and razor-sharp, cutting through the grandeur of the ballroom like a scalpel. "Furthermore, striking the master of this house in his own home is an insult I don't believe his men will tolerate."
She twisted Sienna’s wrist downward just enough to force the socialite down a fraction of an inch, making her wince in agony.
"Step back," Adeline whispered, "before I break the carpal bones in your wrist."
With a sharp thrust, Adeline released her. Sienna stumbled backward, catching herself against the table, clutching her reddened wrist, panting in utter shock and fury.
The entire ballroom was paralyzed. No one—not Julian, not the councilman, not the seasoned capos—had expected the quiet, demure nurse to move with the speed of an assassin.

Nico slowly tilted his head, his dark gaze shifting from Sienna’s trembling figure to Adeline’s back. For the first time in eight months, a dark, genuine smirk touched the corner of his lips.
