Chapter 6 - Shadows and Alliances

"Security!" Julian roared, finally snapping out of his stupor, storming forward. "Take this girl out back and put a bullet in her head! How dare she lay a hand on Councilman Vance’s daughter!"
Two massive, suited guards lunged forward from the perimeter.
"Stand down," Nico’s voice did not rise, but the authority vibrating in it shook the very foundation of the room.
The guards froze mid-step, looking nervously between Julian and Nico.
"Anyone who touches my nurse," Nico said, his voice dropping into the deadly, gravelly register of the man who had burned three rival cartels to the ground, "will not leave this estate breathing. Clear the room. All of you."
The capos didn't hesitate. They knew that tone. Regardless of whether Nico sat in a chair or on a throne, the predator had awakened. Guests began filing out the double doors in hurried, nervous murmurs, Julian glaring daggers at Adeline as he dragged the sobbing, humiliated Sienna with him.
Within three minutes, the grand ballroom was empty, save for the flickering chandeliers, the scattered champagne flutes, and the two of them.
Adeline took a deep breath, her hands trembling slightly now that the adrenaline was subsiding. She smoothed down the front of her uniform.
"You shouldn't have done that," Nico said into the silence.
"She was going to strike you," Adeline replied, turning to face him. "And you wouldn't have dodged it in time. Your pride wouldn't survive the rumor mill by breakfast."
Nico stared at her, his eyes dark, unreadable, and intensely focused. "Julian will kill you for this. Sienna will make sure your brother’s hospital loses its funding by noon tomorrow."
"They won't get the chance," Adeline said quietly, stepping closer to his chair.
Nico’s eyes narrowed. "Why?"
Adeline reached into her medical clutch and pulled out two items: a sealed diagnostic report from an independent private lab, and an empty ampoule of *Neuro-Celtis 50mg*.
She set them both directly on his lap.
"What is this?" he demanded.
"That ampoule came from your private safe," Adeline said, her voice dropping to a whisper that felt like thunder in the cavernous room. "It didn't contain nerve regeneratives, Mr. Alfieri. It contained low-dose succinylcholine mixed with heavy metal stabilizers. It’s an offshore paralytic agent designed to mimic peripheral neuropathy. It was keeping your spine inflamed. Preventing the severed axons from reconnecting."
Nico went rigidly still. The ambient warmth seemed to drain out of him. "Gould?"
"Paid through an offshore shell company registered in Panama," Adeline confirmed. "The account matches the signature on Julian’s personal real estate holding firm. And Sienna's father signed off on the medical board clearance to keep the drug uninspected."
Nico stared at the vial on his knees. The sheer weight of the betrayal settled into the lines of his face, carving them into pure obsidian. Eight months of agony. Eight months of believing his body was permanently dead. Eight months of watching his family pity him, usurp him, mock him.
"How long have you known?" he asked softly.
"I suspected three days ago. I confirmed the chemical compound this morning," Adeline said. "I switched your IV bags forty-eight hours ago to an intensive detox protocol. The reason you had electric spasms in your quads this afternoon wasn't a muscle twitch, Nico."
For the first time, she used his first name.
Nico looked up, his breath catching in his throat.
"Your nerves are firing," Adeline whispered, taking half a step closer, her voice laced with absolute conviction. "The spinal cord was never completely severed. It was suppressed. With the poison clearing your bloodstream, and with the right therapy..."
She knelt down in front of his chair, looking straight into his dark, storm-filled eyes.
"You are going to walk again, Nico Alfieri. And when you do, we are going to destroy every single person who put you in this chair."
Nico looked down at the slender, fearless woman kneeling before him—the only soul in this viper’s nest who hadn't betrayed him, who had stood between him and public humiliation, who held the keys to his resurrection.

Slowly, deliberately, Nico’s right hand moved.
He reached down, his fingers—steady, warm, and alive with lethal intent—closing firmly around Adeline’s hand, sealing a pact that would tear the city apart.
