Chapter 11 - The King’s Reckoning

The room was as silent as a crypt. The smell of cordite mixed with spilled wine and cold sweat. Nico walked with a slow, measured gait toward the head of the table, stopping just inches from where Julian writhed on the marble floor.
"Twenty minutes ago," Nico announced to the frozen assembly of crime lords, "a federal tactical squad intercepted three shipping containers at Pier 42. Containers registered under your name, Julian."
Julian’s face went pasty white. "You... you called the Feds?"
"I don't need the law to fight my wars," Nico said coldly. "I merely pointed them toward the cargo you were smuggling into my city. Human cargo. Women. Children." Nico turned his gaze slowly across the room, locking eyes with the heads of the Falcone and Moretti syndicates. "Is this what the Five Families stand for now? Poisoning your Don in his bed and trafficking souls through our ports?"
Old Man Falcone, the eldest capo in the city, spat on the floor and turned his back on Julian. "We knew nothing of this, Nico. On the souls of our mothers, we thought it was electronics."
"You were blind because you were greedy," Adeline interjected, stepping up beside Nico, her weapon still trained on the doorway where Julian’s personal security detail was supposed to be stationed. "Julian promised you twenty percent higher margins. That extra cash came from the blood of innocents."
Julian looked up from the pool of his own blood, his eyes wide and crazed like a cornered animal. A ghastly, blood-flecked smile spread across his lips.
"You think... you think you've won, Nico?" Julian wheezed, his left hand secretly sliding inside the interior pocket of his vest. "You think you can just stand up... and everything goes back to how it was?"
"I am the Alfieri," Nico said, drawing his suppressed 9mm and pressing the cold barrel directly between Julian's eyes. "Nothing goes back. Everything burns."
"Then we burn together!" Julian shrieked, pulling a small black plastic detonator from his vest.
A high-pitched, electronic whine cut through the room from beneath the banquet floorboards.
Nico’s instincts, honed by a decade of urban warfare, took over in a millisecond. He didn't dive for cover. He didn't think of himself.
"ADELINE!" he roared.
Nico threw his entire rehabilitated body forward, wrapping his massive frame around Adeline, lifting her off her feet as he hurled them both behind the heavy, foot-thick oak serving credenza against the far stone wall.
A split-second later, the world dissolved into fire.
The floor beneath the center of the room erupted upward in a catastrophic, concussive wave of heat, shattered marble, and splintering mahogany. The shockwave threw chairs through the stained-glass windows, and the chandelier—three tons of brass and crystal—crashed down into the blazing crater with a deafening roar.
Black smoke and choking plaster dust filled the air, cutting off the light, leaving only the flickering orange glare of the flames.
Coughing violently, her ears ringing with a piercing, deafening whistle, Adeline blinked through the haze. She was pinned beneath the heavy, muscular weight of Nico Alfieri.
"Nico..." she gasped, her hands searching his shoulders, feeling the sticky warmth of blood soaking through his ruined dress shirt. "Nico, talk to me!"
Nico stirred, his breath coming in shallow, shuddering gasps. A shard of ornamental iron was lodged deep into his right side, just above the hip. Yet his dark eyes opened, clear, lucid, and fiercely protective as he stared down at her face.
"Are you... hurt?" he choked out, his fingers brushing a streak of soot from her cheek.
"I'm fine, but you're hit—we have to move!" she urged, trying to support his weight.
Through the heavy wall of smoke, the sound of heavy tactical boots began crunching against the shattered glass in the corridor outside. It wasn't the police.
A chilling, unfamiliar voice cut through the burning darkness, amplified through an assault-team comms radio:
*"Package one is blown. Sweep the rubble. Find the Don and the girl. The client wants both their heads on ice before sunrise."*
May you like
Adeline froze. Nico’s jaw tightened, his hand gripping his pistol through the bloody dust. Someone else had planned this—someone bigger than Julian, someone who had waited in the dark for this exact moment.
And between the burning ruins of the ballroom and the shadows closing in, their fight had only just begun.
