Chapter 10 - The Architect Behind the Glass

Dante took the worn sheet of paper. His fingers were remarkably steady, but inside, a violent tempest was gathering strength.

The drawing was dated with Lily’s scribbled preschool numbers from six weeks ago—two weeks before she and Elena had officially entered the Rossi household.

The crayon sketch showed the interior of a luxury private terminal lounge at the international airport. Through the large floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Lily had drawn a private jet with a blue tail fin. In the lounge sat two men at a round table.

One man had slicked-back hair and wore a dark suit with a red tie—easily recognizable as Don Vincent Marcone, the head of the rival family.

The other man sitting across from him was an elderly gentleman with silver hair, pristine posture, and a tailored gray coat. On his left hand, Lily had used a dark green crayon to draw a large, round ring shaped like a snake coiled around a stone.

Above the two men, Lily had drawn word bubbles filled with scribbled pretend letters. But beside the silver-haired man, she had drawn a very specific, chilling detail: a small black suitcase open on the table, filled with stacks of green rectangles, and three small, copper-colored oval bugs with tiny legs.

"The man with the snake ring gave the bugs to the angry man," Lily said, her voice lilting casually as if discussing the weather. "He told him that Alessandro’s son was getting too powerful at the docks. He said, 'Put one in his tie, and my people inside the house will handle the rest.'"

Dante’s vision narrowed to a pinpoint.

It hadn't been the Marcones who conceived the plot to assassinate him.

The Marcones were merely the hired muscle, the convenient scapegoat. The architect of the conspiracy—the man who had financed Silvio, the man who had provided the military-grade surveillance bugs, the man who had orchestrated the entire siege from three thousand miles away—was Antonio Cassano.

His father’s closest confidant. Dante’s own godfather.

Antonio had orchestrated the assassination so that the Marcones and Dante would destroy one another in a bloody turf war, leaving the Rossi empire fractured and ripe for Antonio to return from Italy as the grand peacemaker to claim sole dominion over the city.

Marco stared at the drawing from over Dante’s shoulder, his face turning pale as paper. "Mother of God... Antonio? It was Antonio all along?"

Elena gasped, stepping forward to pull Lily gently away from the desk, sensing the terrifying aura radiating from Dante.

Dante didn't shout. He didn't slam his fist onto the mahogany.

Instead, he stood up, his presence filling the grand study like an ominous eclipse. He walked to the tall French doors and looked out into the sunlit garden. The sparrow was perched on the pear tree once more, singing softly in the morning breeze.

A little girl with mismatched shoes and a box of crayons had dismantled a multi-million-dollar international conspiracy before it could claim its prize. She had seen the truth through the innocent clarity of a child's eyes, recording the treason that seasoned detectives and hardened mobsters had completely missed.

Dante turned back to the room. The cold darkness in his eyes was gone, replaced by a crystalline, absolute resolve.

"Marco," Dante said calmly.

"Yes, Don Dante?"
