Chapter 7 - The Hero in Yellow

The storm finally cleared by dawn, leaving the gardens outside glistening with fresh dew and morning light. The garden pear tree stood tall against the brick wall, its branches catching the golden rays of the early sun.

Inside the estate, a small army of cleaners and repairmen had already replaced the ballroom windows, patched the bullet holes, and scrubbed the marble floors until they shone like mirrors. The chaos of midnight was thoroughly erased, replaced by the serene majesty of a noble estate.

In the second-floor dining hall, a massive spread of pancakes, fresh strawberries, chocolate croissants, and fresh cream covered the mahogany table.

Lily sat on two booster cushions, wearing a brand-new lemon-yellow dress that had been delivered by a private boutique courier at six in the morning. Beside her, Maestro Bellini sat with his grandson Leo, a quiet boy who was currently inhaling three blueberry pancakes at once. Bellini’s eyes were filled with tears of gratitude as he watched the children laugh.

Elena stood near the buffet, her face flushed with lingering shock and immense relief.

Dante walked into the room, wearing a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking remarkably refreshed. Marco walked behind him, carrying a massive velvet jewelry case.

"Mr. Boss!" Lily squeaked with syrup on her chin, waving a fork enthusiastically. "Look! The pancakes have tiny chocolate chips inside! Like buried treasure!"

Dante couldn't stop the genuine warmth from breaking across his usually stone-hard features. He walked over to her chair and took a seat beside her, completely ignoring the decorum of an underworld Don.

"Is that so?" Dante asked, watching her with a gentle smile. "And did you find all the treasure?"

"Almost all of it," Lily said, chewing thoughtfully. "Mommy said you made the bad storm go away last night. Was it very loud?"

"Just a little thunder, little mouse. Nothing for you to worry about ever again." Dante looked over at Maestro Bellini, who stood up immediately, trembling with emotion.

"Don Dante... I can never repay you," Bellini whispered, his voice cracking. "You saved my Leo. You gave an old fool another chance."

"You made a mistake out of love for your blood, Bellini," Dante said solemnly. "I understand that. But from now on, if someone threatens you, you come through the front door of this house. You belong to the Rossi family. Remember that."

Bellini bowed deeply, wiping away tears. "On my life, Don Dante. On my mother's grave."

Dante turned his attention back to Lily. He signaled Marco, who stepped forward and opened the velvet box on the table.

Inside lay a gleaming gold medallion shaped like a tiny sparrow, suspended from a delicate platinum chain. On the back, etched in fine script, was the official crest of the Rossi family and the words: *Under the Don’s Personal Wing.*

Elena gasped, covering her mouth. "Don Dante... that is... that is family gold. We cannot accept such a thing!"

"She saved my life, Elena," Dante replied, turning his gaze toward the mother with unwavering conviction. "Without Lily, I would be buried in an unmarked grave, and this house would be reduced to ash. From this day forward, Lily is not the daughter of my staff. She is my goddaughter. She will attend the finest academies in the country. She will have private tutors, personal security, and a trust fund in her name that guarantees her total freedom for life."

Lily looked at the shiny gold bird, her eyes sparkling. "Can I wear it to preschool?"

May you like

"You can wear it anywhere you like," Dante said, gently lifting the medallion and fastening the clasp behind her small neck. The golden bird rested brightly against her yellow dress. "And whenever you show this bird to anyone in this city, they will know that you are Dante Rossi's family."
