Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Cellar

Dante’s blood turned to ice. He took the drawing from Lily’s outstretched hand.

The drawing depicted the ornate brick archways of the estate’s private wine vault. In the center stood a tall, broad-shouldered figure wearing a black overcoat, with a distinct red scar drawn jaggedly across his left cheek. Beside the figure was a car with its headlights switched off.

There was only one man in the entire Rossi syndicate who possessed that scar: Silvio Morretti, Dante’s own third-in-command and the man in charge of perimeter logistics for over a decade.

Dante’s chest heaved silently. Silvio had broken bread with his father. Silvio had attended Dante’s confirmation ceremony. Yet, here was proof that treachery had burrowed into the very marrow of his inner circle. Silvio had witnessed Lily cut the tie earlier that morning; he had heard the off-hand comments and realized that Dante's suspicion was piqued. Silvio knew that if Dante dug deep enough, the chain of command would lead directly to him.

"Elena," Dante said, keeping his voice dangerously measured. "Lock this suite from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except Marco or myself. Do you understand?"

Elena nodded vigorously, gathering Lily tightly into her arms. "Yes, Don Dante. God protect us."

Lily peeked over her mother's shoulder, waving her small fingers at him. "Be careful of the stairs, Mr. Boss. The rain makes them slippery."

"I will, little mouse," Dante murmured, a faint, rare smile gracing his lips before vanishing behind a mask of absolute ferocity.

Dante walked down the grand spiraling staircase. His footsteps made no sound against the thick wool runners. He bypassed the main study and descended into the service corridors that led toward the temperature-controlled cellars beneath the eastern foundation.

The air grew damp and cool, smelling of aged oak barrels, vintage pinot, and earth. The fluorescent tubes flickered slightly against the stone vaulted ceiling.

Dante drew his custom black Beretta from his side holster, screwing the sleek titanium suppressor onto the barrel with practiced ease. He moved between the rows of iron wine racks like a phantom.

Ahead, near the old tasting alcove, a low voice vibrated through the quiet subterranean cavern.

"...I told you, it fell apart before the meeting even started," the voice hissed into an encrypted satellite phone. "The boss never went to City Hall. He's at the docks right now with Marco's team. The house is completely empty except for three perimeter boys and the maid staff."

Dante stepped silently behind a pillar of aged Chianti crates, listening closely.

"Luca failed to capture the leverage he needed," Silvio continued, his tone dripping with frustration. "The kid cut the tie off him. I don't know how the brat spotted the rig, but she’s the only one who can place Luca at Bellini's shop. Bellini will crack in five minutes under Dante's tongs. We strike tonight. Send the extraction van to the service gate. I’ll eliminate the girl and her mother myself, clean up the paper trail, and leave the gate open for your team to take the estate."

A pause on the line. Then Silvio chuckled darkly. "Dante thinks he rules this city. By dawn, the Marcones will hold the keys to the Rossi vault."

Silvio clicked the phone shut and slid it into his leather jacket. He turned around, pulling a snub-nosed revolver from his waistband, preparing to climb the service stairs toward the west wing.

He didn't make it two steps.

A hand made of cold steel shot out from behind the stone pillar, gripping Silvio’s wrist and twisting it with sickening leverage. A loud pop echoed as bone dislocated. Silvio gasped, dropping the weapon onto the flagstones.

Before the traitor could scream, the barrel of Dante’s Beretta was shoved violently into his mouth, cracking against his front teeth.

Dante’s eyes burned like twin furnaces in the gloom.

"You speak my father's name with that filthy mouth, Silvio?" Dante whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute lethal intent. "You would murder an innocent child in her bed to save your own miserable skin?"
