Chapter 8 - A New Morning

For the next three days, an unusual peace descended over the estate. The Marcone family, devastated by the loss of Victor’s assault squad and terrified by Dante’s swift retribution, sued for a complete ceasefire. They surrendered three major port warehouses and withdrew all their operations from the northern river district.
Dante spent his afternoons working in his grand study with the French doors open to the garden. For the first time in ten years, he found himself distracted from his business ledgers by the sound of childish laughter drifting across the lawn.
Lily had adopted the garden as her personal kingdom. She spent hours hunting for ladybugs in the rosebushes, closely trailed by two massive, tattooed security guards who had willingly abandoned their stoic menacing personas to carry her juice boxes and hold her butterfly net.
Elena had been promoted to estate manager, given authority over the entire household staff and a private cottage on the estate grounds with high vaulted ceilings and a modern kitchen.
"You look different, Don Dante," Marco noted quietly, standing beside Dante’s desk with a stack of signed union treaties.
"Different how?" Dante asked, not looking up from a blueprints document.
"You're not smoking three packs a day. And yesterday, I saw you smile at a drawing of a purple dinosaur."
Dante paused, glancing at the polished corner of his desk. Tucked neatly beside a bronze letter opener was Lily’s latest masterpiece: a drawing of Dante with a comically oversized head, wearing a bright yellow necktie, holding hands with a smiling stick figure in a yellow dress.
"A man needs balance, Marco," Dante said smoothly, though the slight quirk of his mouth betrayed him. "Running an empire gets exhausting when all you do is look over your shoulder for knives. That child... she sees through the smoke. She sees things for what they really are."
"Speaking of drawings," Marco said, his tone shifting into something slightly more cautious. "We went through Silvio’s personal safe at his downtown apartment. We found records of payments dating back nearly eighteen months."
Dante’s eyes sharpened. "From the Marcones?"
"That’s the strange thing, boss," Marco said, furrowing his brow. "The money didn't originate from the Marcone banks. It was routed through an offshore shell company registered in Zurich. The signature on the authorization papers was encrypted, but the account initials were 'A.C.'"
Dante went completely still.
A.C.
There was only one man associated with the Rossi family who carried those initials: Antonio Cassano. Antonio was Dante’s godfather, the semi-retired consigliere who had guided Dante’s father through the bloody territory wars of the 1990s. Antonio was currently living in a peaceful villa in Lake Como, supposed to be far removed from the city's turf battles.
"Did Silvio have any direct correspondence with Switzerland?" Dante asked, his voice suddenly thick with tension.
"None," Marco said. "Just the wire transfers. We assumed the Marcones were using a blind account, but the trail is tangled. I have our cyber teams digging into the server logs right now."
Before Dante could press further, the heavy mahogany doors of the study flew open.
Lily came bouncing into the room, her lemon-yellow dress slightly smudged with garden dirt, carrying her battered white shoebox beneath her arm.

"Mr. Boss! Mr. Boss!" she announced with tremendous excitement. "I found the lost treasure in the attic!"
