Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Wire

The ballroom’s golden chandeliers suddenly felt blindingly harsh, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished marble. The polite murmurs of the departing dignitaries faded into a hollow hum as Hayes’s words sank in.

"Say that again, Hayes," Mason commanded, his voice dropping into the low, lethal register he used when coordinating airstrikes under active fire. His posture shifted instantly, shielding my flank with practiced instinct.

Captain Hayes stepped tighter into our circle, lowering his voice until it was barely a vibration against the ambient music. "Apex Holdings. The predatory loan firm Sienna borrowed six hundred and fifty thousand dollars from over the past eighteen months. On paper, it’s a high-interest boutique lender operating out of Manhattan. In reality, their primary liquidity pipeline routes through shell entities based in Zurich and Limassol. Major Vance, it’s Project Nightfall. The exact offshore network you and Joint Counter-Intelligence have been tracking since January."

My stomach turned to pure ice. For eight months, my task force had been hunting a covert foreign intelligence cell specializing in compromised financial leverage against senior defense personnel. We knew they targeted defense contractors, procurement officers, and vulnerable military families to extract technical data or classified access.

Never in my darkest nightmares had I imagined they were operating inside my own bloodline.

"Sienna thought she was just borrowing money from aggressive loan sharks to bankroll her designer clothes and influencer lifestyle," I said, my voice dangerously calm as the puzzle pieces clicked together. "They intentionally let her rack up insurmountable debt. Why? Sienna doesn't have security clearance. She has nothing of intelligence value."

"Not directly," Hayes answered, handing me a secured tablet displaying encrypted bank slips and promissory agreements signed in Sienna’s erratic, bubbly handwriting. "Look at the collateral clauses, Major."

Mason leaned over my shoulder. As his eyes scanned the digital documents, a dark, terrifying vein pulsed along his jawline.

"They didn't ask for real estate," Mason whispered, his fingers curling into hard fists. "They demanded access to Thomas Vance’s personal effects."

My breath caught in my throat. My late father, Colonel Thomas Vance, had been a pioneer in drone telemetry and automated battlefield coordination before he died in a classified helicopter incident eight years ago. Before his death, the Pentagon had audited his personal research, but several personal journals, footlockers, and unclassified prototype logs had been left in my mother's attic.

"Mother," I breathed, horror prickling across my scalp. "When she called me two weeks ago demanding the remainder of the military death benefit, she said Sienna had already put up 'family heirlooms' to secure an extension on her payment deadline."

"Did she touch the footlockers?" Mason demanded, his gaze boring into mine with urgent intensity.

"Dad gave me the keys to his personal lockboxes on his deathbed," I replied, my pulse hammering in my ears. "Mother never had the combinations. But if Sienna gave those men physical access to the house..."

Before Hayes could answer, two Military Police officers jogged through the side entrance of the hall, their faces pale. The lead sergeant snapped a sharp salute to Mason.

"Sir! The holding area in Corridor C," the sergeant panted. "The mother and sister. We were processing them for civilian transport to the municipal precinct, but civilian counsel just arrived."

"Civilian counsel?" Mason barked. "They were arrested less than twenty minutes ago. How could a private lawyer already be on site?"

"He didn't come for the mother, Colonel," the sergeant said, swallowing hard. "He presented an urgent federal writ. He claims to represent Apex Holdings, and he’s demanding immediate custody of Sienna Vance as an essential corporate debtor."

Mason and I exchanged a single, electrified glance. They weren't trying to collect a financial debt anymore. They realized Sienna was in military custody, and they were trying to extract or silence their unwitting pawn before she talked.

"Lock down every exit of this facility immediately," Mason ordered coldly. "Hayes, scramble Quick Reaction Force Alpha. Olivia, you’re with me. Nobody takes a single breath near that holding room until we get answers."
