Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Command

The banquet hall seemed to lose all air.

Evelyn froze, her mouth hanging open. Sienna blinked rapidly, looking between General Vance and me as if she had suddenly lost the ability to comprehend the English language.

"M-Major?" Evelyn stammered, nervous laughter bubbling in her throat. "General, you're mistaken. Her name is Olivia. She's an administrative assistant... she processes soil import paperwork..."

"Silence," Mason ordered.

The authority in Mason's voice wasn't that of a polite corporate executive. It was the absolute, unquestioned command of a battlefield leader.

Colonel Hayes stepped forward, flanked by two armed federal officers in dark suits who had just entered through the side doors. Hayes held open a leather credential folder displaying the crest of the Department of the Army and the Joint Special Operations Command.

"For the record," Hayes announced, his voice carrying to every corner of the room, "Major Olivia Vance is the Deputy Director of Tactical Intelligence for JSOC. Her identity, assignments, and location have been classified under Title 10 of the United States Code for operational security."

Sienna took a step back, her knees visibly trembling. "No... that's impossible. She sat at a computer in Arlington..."

"And Colonel Mason Sterling," Hayes continued, gesturing to the man standing beside me, "is the commanding officer of the 75th Special Operations Reconnaissance Group. You are currently standing inside a private military-sanctioned reception hall reserved under federal defense protocols."

Evelyn's face drained of every ounce of color. The smug, self-righteous arrogance that had sustained her for decades shattered into dust.

"Assaulting an active-duty commissioned officer of the United States Armed Forces," Hayes stated coldly, "is a severe violation under both federal criminal statutes and U.S. Code Title 18, Section 111. Furthermore, attempting to extort classified defense personnel through coercion, threats of public defamation, and harassment carries an immediate federal indictment."

"Extort?" Evelyn squeaked, her voice trembling violently. "No... no, I didn't extort anyone! She's my daughter! I was asking for family assistance!"

"You didn't ask," I said, stepping closer to her until I could see the panic vibrating in her pupils. "You threatened me. You told me you would ruin my reputation if I didn't transfer five hundred thousand dollars by Monday morning. And before that, you forged my signature on two separate loan applications against my father's military survivor annuity."

Sienna gasped, clutching her clutch bag to her stomach. "How... how do you know about that?"

"Did you really believe an intelligence officer wouldn't notice an unauthorized credit inquiry originating from your boutique's IP address?" I looked at my sister with pure pity. "I let it go the first time because Dad asked me to look out for you. But you didn't stop. You took out predatory loans from offshore shell companies, using our father's veteran status as collateral."

"Olivia, please!" Evelyn cried, reaching out to grab my arm, but one of the federal officers immediately stepped between us, his hand hovering over his sidearm. "Don't do this! We're your flesh and blood!"

May you like

"You stopped being my mother the moment you raised your hand against me," I replied. "And you stopped being Thomas Vance's widow the moment you gambled away his memory."
