Chapter 11 - The Unseen Hand

By 0300 hours, the military police transport convoy had assembled at the rear loading dock of the facility.
Sienna and Evelyn were led out in federal custody jumpsuits, their wrists bound in heavy steel restraints. The transformation was complete. The entitled socialites who had strutted into the gala expecting to bully me out of my father's legacy now looked like broken ghosts.
As Sienna was escorted past me toward the armored transport van, she stopped, looking at me through swollen, tear-stained eyes.
"Olivia..." she choked out, her voice cracked and hollow. "What's going to happen to us?"
"You're going to federal detention, Sienna," I said, my voice level and unyielding. "The Department of Justice and the Counter-Espionage Tribunal will decide whether you spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary or the rest of your life. I won't be there to bail you out. Not with a single dollar."
Evelyn tried to speak, but when her eyes met mine, she saw only an impenetrable wall of steel. She bowed her head in total, absolute defeat and climbed into the transport without another word. The heavy armored doors slammed shut and locked from the outside.
Mason stepped up beside me, wrapping a warm, strong arm around my shoulders. He gently pulled me against his chest, letting me rest my forehead against his shoulder for the first time in hours. The adrenaline was finally wearing off, leaving behind an ache that ran straight to my bones.
"It’s over, Liv," Mason murmured softly, kissing the crown of my head. "The network here is dismantled. Your father’s legacy is safe. And tomorrow, we begin our own lives. Just you and me."
I closed my eyes, taking in the scent of his skin and the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. "Just you and me," I echoed.
Suddenly, Hayes sprinted down the concrete ramp from the communications bunker, his face as white as a sheet. He held a secure satellite phone, his hand trembling slightly.
"Colonel! Major! You need to hear this right now!" Hayes gasped, panting for breath.
Mason immediately stiffened, releasing me and stepping forward. "What is it, Hayes? We just secured the transport."
"It's not about the transport here," Hayes said, his voice shaking. "We just intercepted a high-priority, encrypted transmission beamed from an offshore satellite directly into our base comms array. It used Major Vance’s highest-level personal clearance codes."
My heart plummeted into my gut. "That’s impossible. Only two people ever possessed those cryptographic master sequences: me, and..."
"And your father," Hayes finished.
Before Mason or I could speak, Hayes hit the speaker button on the satellite phone.
Through the static of a heavily scrambled military frequency, a distorted, deep voice echoed through the cold night air—speaking in a cadence that made every drop of blood in my veins turn instantly to fire.
*"Major Vance. Or should I say... Little Bird."*
Only one man in the entire world had ever called me Little Bird. My father.
*"If you are listening to this, the trap worked,"* the voice continued, smooth and chillingly alive. *"Your mother and sister were necessary sacrifices to pull your task force into the light. Thank you for securing the key tonight, Olivia. My operatives are already moving to collect it from your fiancé."*
A sudden, deafening explosion rocked the highway three hundred yards beyond our base perimeter gate.

A massive fireball shot into the night sky—right where Sienna and Evelyn's armored transport convoy had just turned onto Route 9.
And then, Mason’s tactical radio hissed to life with a sniper’s cold whisper: *"Target locked on the Colonel. Stand down, Major Vance... or he dies where he stands."*
