Chapter 5 - The Fall of Sienna's Empire

Within minutes, the formal reception dissolved into a coordinated legal takedown.
Two more agents from the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) arrived, accompanied by city police officers. The civilian guests had backed away, forming a wide circle of onlookers who watched with utter disgust as Evelyn and Sienna were cornered against the decorative ice sculpture.
"Ma'am, keep your hands where we can see them," a DCIS investigator ordered Evelyn, taking out a pair of steel handcuffs.
"Do not touch me!" Evelyn screamed, her composure completely disintegrating into hysterical panic. "Do you know who I am? I am a Gold Star mother! I will call the governor! I will call the press!"
"The press is already outside, Evelyn," Mason remarked smoothly, checking his watch. "And they're not here for a human-interest story. They're here to cover the dismantling of an illegal loan-sharking and identity-theft syndicate targeting military families—a syndicate that your daughter Sienna has been feeding client data to for the past six months."
Sienna dropped her purse. It hit the marble floor, its contents spilling out: high-end cosmetics, gold credit cards, and several folded documents bearing forged federal stamps.
"Sienna?" Evelyn turned toward her younger daughter, horror finally piercing through her narcissistic haze. "What is he talking about? What syndicate?"
Sienna was sobbing uncontrollably now, mascara running in black streaks down her cheeks. "I didn't have a choice, Mom! The boutique went under four months ago! The loan sharks said they would break my legs if I didn't give them access to veteran accounts! I thought... I thought Olivia's clearance meant she could just wipe the debts clean!"
"You used Dad's military records to scam other veterans?" Evelyn gasped, stumbling backward.
"You knew about it, Evelyn," I said, my voice cutting through her desperate denial. "You signed as the co-guarantor on three of those fraudulent accounts. You thought my father's legacy would protect you from prison. You thought my silence would buy your survival."
"Olivia, baby, please..." Evelyn sank to her knees right in the middle of the ballroom floor, clasping her hands together in a frantic, humiliating plea. "I'm your mother! I raised you! You can't let them take me to jail! Tell them it was a misunderstanding! Tell Mason to call off the investigators!"
Mason looked down at her with unvarnished contempt. "Major Vance doesn't take orders from extortionists. And I certainly do not negotiate with criminals who abuse my future wife."
Mason gave a single nod to the DCIS team.

The click of the handcuffs ratcheting around Evelyn's wrists echoed like thunder across the room.
