Chapter 9 - The Arrest in Broad Daylight

Vivian didn't hesitate.
Before Kelsey could even scream, Vivian ripped the diamond stud earrings from her own ears, tore off her gold Cartier watch, and shoved them through the window into Marcus’s open palm.
"Take it! Take it all!" Vivian shrilled, desperate to save her own skin. "Just let us go! We have a private flight waiting!"
Marcus weighed the gold in his palm, his lip curling in disgust. "This doesn't cover half your sister's debt, Vivian. But your time is up anyway."
He pointed toward the entrance of the industrial park.
Through the fog, three Charleston County squad cars and two unmarked black SUVs screeched around the corner, red and blue lights flashing in blinding strobes across the rusted metal walls of the alley.
"Police! Do not move! Step out of the vehicle with your hands up!" the megaphone boomed.
Marcus didn't run. He calmly stepped back, raised his hands into the air, and offered no resistance whatsoever, letting his personal lawyers handle the situation.
Kelsey, however, lost what little sanity she had left.
"No! No! I'm not going to jail!" she shrieked, slamming the Mercedes into reverse.
The tires screamed against the damp concrete. She backed up violently, smashing into the front bumper of an armored police interceptor. The impact deployed the airbags with an explosive *bang*, slamming Kelsey and Vivian back into their leather seats, dazing them instantly.
Within seconds, the driver and passenger doors were ripped open.
"Out! Get on the ground! Do it now!"
Vivian was dragged out into the wet gravel, her designer trench coat soaked in muddy puddle water. Her wig was knocked askew, her lipstick smeared across her chin as a female officer pinned her knee into the small of Vivian’s back.
"Get your filthy hands off me!" Vivian screeched, her voice echoing shrilly through the industrial corridor. "Do you know who I am?! I am Vivian Vaughn! My father was a state senator! You can't treat me like this!"
"Vivian Vaughn, you are under arrest for attempted murder and aggravated child abuse," the arresting officer stated coldly, wrenching Vivian’s arms behind her back with a sharp click of steel handcuffs. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Beside her, Kelsey was sobbing hysterically, vomiting onto the pavement as another officer pulled her upright and secured her wrists.
"Mom! Do something! Tell them it was your idea!" Kelsey wailed, her voice cracking in pure terror. "You told me to grab the box! You told me she wouldn't miss it! Mom!"
Vivian twisted her head, glaring at her golden child with utter venom. "Shut your mouth, you pathetic little leech! You ruined my life! If you hadn't been so greedy, we would already be in Florida!"
A crowd of onlookers and news vans had already gathered at the perimeter of the industrial park, cameras flashing relentlessly as the disgraced socialites were shoved into the back of separate patrol cars.
The broadcast went live across the state within ten minutes: *High Society Heiresses Arrested in Horrific Kitchen Attack on Pregnant Doctor’s Wife.*
The court of public opinion was already over.

And their nightmare had only just begun.
