Chapter 5 - The Breath of Life

"Pediatric team, bag her!" Dr. Lin ordered, her hands still deep inside my abdominal cavity, packing the bleeding vessels. "Get the airway clear! Give me three of epinephrine ready on the warmer!"

Across the room, beneath the glowing heat lamps of the infant resuscitation cart, two pediatric nurses and a neonatologist were bent over a tiny, purplish form.

Ethan squeezed my hand so tightly my bones ground together. His eyes were locked on that corner of the room, his chest hitching as if he had forgotten how to breathe.

"Come on, Lily," he whispered, a broken prayer tearing from his throat. "Come on, little girl. Come to Daddy. Breathe."

I closed my eyes, tears cutting clean lines through the soot and sweat on my cheeks. *Take me,* I prayed into the void of the sterile room. *Take my skin, take my blood, take my life. Just let my daughter breathe.*

The rhythmic *thwack-thwack* of the manual oxygen bag echoed across the tile.

One second.

Five seconds.

Ten unbearable, agonizing seconds of absolute silence.

Then—a tiny, raspy sputter.

A cough.

Followed by a thin, indignant, furious wail that cracked through the tension of the operating room like lightning through a dark sky.

*Waaaah!*

The cry grew stronger, louder, bursting into a defiant, healthy roar of an eight-month-old infant fighting for her place in this cruel world.

"We have spontaneous respiration!" the neonatologist called out, relief washing over the staff. "APGAR is six, improving to eight! Heart rate climbing to one-forty! She’s a fighter, Dr. Vance!"

Tears spilled freely over Ethan’s surgical mask. He leaned down and kissed my forehead, right above the angry red welt where the boiling milk had kissed my hairline. "She's here, Maddie. She's breathing. Lily is alive."

"Let me... let me see her," I wept, exhaustion pulling my limbs down like lead weights.

The nurse swaddled the tiny four-pound miracle in a warm blanket and brought her to my cheek for half a second. Her face was red, her tiny fists balled up, fighting the cold air. Her skin smelled like sweet amniotic fluid and clean cotton.

She brushed against my cheek, and in that fleeting instant, the third-degree burns eating through my nerves ceased to exist.

"She's beautiful," I whispered before the nurse pulled her away toward the NICU incubator. "She's so beautiful..."

"Madison's pressure is dropping," the anesthesiologist called out urgently. "Eighty over forty. Burn shock is setting in. We need to close and transfer her to the burn ICU immediately."

"I've got the uterine artery secured," Dr. Lin said, working furiously. "Suture! Ethan, you need to step out now."

Ethan didn't want to leave, but he knew the rules. He kissed my knuckles, his eyes dark with a sudden, freezing resolve.

"I'm going to make sure Lily is settled in the NICU," he said softly, his voice trembling with a terrifying coldness. "And then... I am going to deal with your mother."

Before the sedation finally dragged me under into deep, painless oblivion, the heavy doors opened, and two uniformed police officers appeared at the scrub sink, looking for Dr. Vance.

Vivian hadn't just run.

She had already gone on the offensive.
