Chapter 2 - Scalding Betrayal

The heavy stainless-steel pot moved through the air with sickening deliberate intent.
There was no sudden stumble. There was no nervous twitch of the wrist or accidental slip of wet fingers. Vivian looked right into my eyes, her jaw set like granite, and hurled the thick, steaming wave of white liquid straight toward my swollen belly.
"You ungrateful little bitch!" she snarled.
My body moved before my brain could process the sheer savagery of what she had done. A mother’s primal instinct isn’t reasoned out; it’s an involuntary surge of electric fire. Knowing my eight-month unborn daughter was directly in the path of the boiling milk, I wrenched my heavy body sideways, curling my spine and throwing my left arm and shoulder across the front of my dress to shield Lily.
The boiling milk struck.
It soaked through my linen cardigan and seared through the cotton of my maternity dress. The pain didn't register as heat at first—it felt like a thousand rusted razor blades ripping across my forearm, neck, and the left slope of my stomach. A horrific, sickening sizzle rose into the air, followed instantly by the suffocating smell of scorched fabric and scalded flesh.
A scream tore from the depths of my lungs, so raw and violent it scraped my vocal cords bloody.
"Maddie!" Kelsey shrieked, backing away toward the kitchen island, hands covering her mouth, though her eyes remained wide, greedy, and frantic.
My legs buckled beneath me. The agony was blinding, white-hot, and all-consuming. I crashed against the side of the wooden dining chair and slammed hard onto the cold kitchen floor. As my hip struck the ceramic tile, a deep, terrifying snap echoed inside my core.
It wasn't a bone.
It was an internal pop that felt like a balloon bursting beneath my ribcage.
Within half a second, a torrential rush of warm amniotic fluid gushed down my thighs, mixing instantly with the puddle of scalding milk and the drops of my own blistering skin on the white tiles.
"My baby..." I gasped, clawing at the tile, trembling violently as shock gripped my nervous system. "My baby! Call nine-one-one!"
Vivian stood over me, the empty pot clattering to the floor from her fingers. There was no remorse in her eyes—only a cold, manic terror of being caught.
"Look what you made me do," Vivian hissed, her voice trembling not with guilt, but with fury. "You lunged at me, Madison! You attacked me! It was an accident!"
Beside her, Kelsey didn't look at my burns. She didn't look at the spreading puddle of amniotic fluid pooling around my knees. She darted forward like a scavenger bird, her manicured fingers diving straight toward my right hand, which was pinned beneath my trembling ribs.
She yanked the velvet box out of my blistered grip with brutal force.
"Got it! Mom, let's go! We have to go before Ethan comes back!" Kelsey whimpered, clutching the diamond inheritance against her chest like a lifeline.
"Give it back..." I choked out, a wave of black nausea washing over my eyes. A contraction hit me like a runaway freight train—a contraction so violent and unnatural that my entire abdomen seized into an iron knot. "Help me... Ethan!"
The back door clicked open.
Footsteps echoed down the foyer.
"Maddie? Honey, Mrs. Gable forgot her pie dish—" Ethan’s voice cut through the air, casual and warm, before dying completely in his throat.
Vivian froze. Kelsey tucked the velvet box deep into her oversized designer purse.

"Ethan!" Vivian wailed instantly, forcing tears into her eyes and falling to her knees beside me, putting on the performance of a lifetime. "Thank God you're here! She slipped! Madison tripped on her own dress and pulled the hot stove down on herself!"
