Chapter 3 - Blood on the Linoleum

Ethan didn't listen to a single syllable coming out of my mother's mouth.
As a trauma surgeon at St. Jude’s, Ethan’s brain bypassed panic and locked straight into emergency triage mode. In two strides, he crossed the expanse of the kitchen, knocking Vivian aside so hard she stumbled against the refrigerator.
"Madison!" His voice cracked with a terrifying mix of professional urgency and raw, husbandly heartbreak.
He dropped to his knees right into the pool of milk, fluid, and blood, uncaring of his clean slacks. His hands hovered over me, taking in the horrific scene with practiced, horrified precision.
The pattern of the burn wasn't a downward spill from a dropped pot. It was a high, lateral splatter—a directional wave that had coated my left shoulder, neck, and the left quadrant of my baby bump. Blisters were already rising, thick, yellow, and swollen, pulling the scorched fabric of my dress into the raw, weeping flesh beneath.
"Contraction..." I wheezed, my fingernails digging into Ethan’s forearm so deeply that I drew blood. "Water... water broke. Ethan, Lily... she’s not moving."
Ethan’s face went chalk-white. He pressed two fingers against my belly, feeling the rock-hard tension of a catastrophic, traumatic labor contraction.
"Placental abruption," he whispered under his breath, the surgeon in him diagnosing the nightmare before his eyes. The trauma of the scalding heat and the violent fall had likely torn the placenta from the uterine wall.
"It was an accident, Ethan!" Vivian cried, hovering behind him, her hands trembling as she smoothed her hair. "She was reaching for the tea kettle and—"
"Shut the hell up!" Ethan roared, his voice rattling the kitchen cabinets. He turned his head, his hazel eyes burning with a rage so absolute, so murderous, that Vivian physically took two steps back. "I’ve operated on burn victims for ten years, Vivian! Liquid does not splash horizontally across a room from a falling pot! Get out of my way before I kill you myself!"
He yanked his phone from his pocket, hitting speed dial for the hospital’s direct paramedic dispatch.
"This is Dr. Ethan Vance. Code Red OB-trauma at twelve-forty Ocean Drive. Second-to-third degree burns on thirty-two-week pregnant female. Spontaneous rupture of membranes with suspected acute placental abruption. Dispatch the flight medics and have OR Three prepped for an emergency crash C-section now!"
Kelsey was edging toward the hallway door, her knuckles white around the strap of her handbag. "Mom, we... we should go wait outside. We're in the way."
"She has... the box," I whispered through gritted teeth, my vision fading into gray tunnel vision as another wave of searing agony ripped through my lower abdomen. "Ethan... the safe. Kelsey took the diamonds..."
Ethan’s gaze flicked to the open pantry where the hallway mirror reflected the open master bedroom upstairs. He saw Kelsey’s guilty, darting eyes, and the bulky silhouette in her designer bag.
"Don't you dare leave this house," Ethan growled at Kelsey, his voice dropped to a lethal register.
"You can't accuse me of anything!" Kelsey shrieked defensively, her voice pitching into hysteria. "You care more about your stupid jewelry than your dying wife! We're leaving!"
Vivian grabbed Kelsey’s arm, and the two of them bolted through the front door, slamming it shut just as the wail of distant sirens began to echo over the coastal bluffs.
Ethan didn't chase them. He couldn't.
He leaned down, gently pouring cold drinking water from a pitcher over a clean kitchen towel and pressing it tenderly against my unburned skin, avoiding the catastrophic blisters.
"Stay with me, Maddie," he choked out, tears finally breaking from his lashes and dripping onto my cheek. "Don't you close your eyes. Look at me. Look at Ethan. You and Lily are coming out of this. Do you hear me? Look at me!"
"It hurts so much," I sobbed, the world going dark around the edges. "Ethan... protect our girl."

The front door burst open as four paramedics charged in with a stretcher, but my consciousness had already shattered into blackness.
