Chapter 5 - The Luncheon Ambush

By noon, the atmosphere in the Paradise Valley mansion felt like a loaded gun.

Damian had retreated to his home office, keeping the door cracked just enough to monitor the hallway. Downstairs, Julianna Vance arrived right on schedule, wearing a tailored cream blazer, designer heels, and carrying an air of total entitlement.

“Gertie! Brenda!” Julianna’s voice echoed up the grand foyer. “It feels like ages!”

Damian watched through the balustrade as Gertrude embraced Julianna warmly—an affection she had never once shown Fiona. Moments later, Fiona appeared from the hallway carrying a tray of iced tea glasses.

Julianna looked past Fiona as if she were furniture, handing her a designer silk scarf without looking. “Hang that in the coat room, will you? Make sure the velvet hanger is used. It’s custom Hermès.”

Fiona hesitated, holding the scarf. Before she could move, Brenda chimed in with a sweet, venomous laugh: “Be careful with that, Fiona. It cost more than your mother’s trailer.”

Damian descended the stairs, his footsteps deliberate against the travertine.

“Julianna,” Damian said smoothly.

Julianna spun around, her eyes lighting up with genuine greed. “Damian! I was hoping we’d have a moment alone before dinner tomorrow. My father wanted me to discuss the Scottsdale resort zoning permits with you.”

“Did he?” Damian reached the bottom step. He walked directly to Fiona, took the silk scarf from her hands, and dropped it onto the hall console table. Then he slipped an arm firmly around Fiona’s waist, pulling her flush against his side.

Julianna’s eyes widened, darting between Damian’s arm and Fiona’s stunned face.

“Fiona handles my schedule now,” Damian said, his voice smooth as silk and cold as iron. “Any meetings your father wants must go through her first.”

Brenda sputtered, stepping forward. “Damian, don’t be absurd. Fiona doesn’t understand corporate acquisitions. Julianna came here to help us plan the charity gala!”

“Actually,” Gertrude interrupted, trying to regain control with a strained smile, “Brenda brought something very important to my attention this morning, Damian. We didn’t want to ruin the afternoon, but since we are all here... we need to discuss household finances.”

Gertrude reached into her leather handbag and pulled out a manila folder, identical to the ones Brenda’s accountant had prepared.

“What is this?” Damian asked, his expression entirely neutral.

“It’s a discrepancy,” Brenda said, her tone suddenly drenched in theatrical pity. “From the hotel foundation. Over sixty thousand dollars has been drained into an unauthorized personal account. We traced the routing number, Damian. It belongs to Fiona.”

Julianna gasped softly, covering her mouth with perfectly manicured fingers. “Oh, Fiona... how could you? When Damian gives you everything?”

Fiona went completely white. “What? That’s not true! I’ve never touched the foundation funds! Damian, I swear to you—”

“Be quiet, Fiona,” Gertrude said coldly. “The bank records don’t lie. Damian, you have to protect yourself. Call the corporate attorneys now.”

Damian looked down at the folder, then looked up at his mother. A slow, terrifying smile spread across his lips.

“You’re right, Mother,” Damian said softly. “Bank records don’t lie.”
