Chapter 1 - "Never Really One of Us"

My millionaire husband secretly followed me because he thought I was hiding something.
What he found was worse than an affair.
He saw me sitting alone in our kitchen, eating reheated leftovers while his mother and sister drank expensive wine with guests only a few yards away.
Then he heard his sister laugh:
“She still doesn’t understand. She was never really one of us.”
Damian almost walked into the room.
But he stopped when our cook placed a thick envelope beside me.
By midnight, he had opened it.
And what was inside made him realize he had no idea what had been happening in his own home.
My name is Fiona O’Connor.
Before Damian became the owner of a rapidly growing hotel company, we were broke.
When his first business failed, I sold the bracelet my grandmother left me so we could pay rent.
Years later, Damian became wealthy beyond anything we had imagined.
But success changed our life.
He traveled constantly.
His sister Brenda moved into our Paradise Valley home after her divorce.
His mother, Gertrude, began spending more time there too.
They never believed I belonged in Damian’s new world.
Brenda criticized my clothes.
Gertrude treated me like the ordinary woman Damian should have outgrown.
Damian rarely saw it.
He was always working.
Then one afternoon, he returned home early and saw me leaving in an old car.
He followed.
I drove to a modest apartment building, stayed nearly an hour, then bought groceries and medicine.
Damian assumed I was hiding something.
That night, he questioned our longtime cook, Helena.
She finally admitted the truth.
I had been helping Miriam, a former employee whose husband had died.
Then Helena quietly added:
“Mrs. Fiona helps other people too. More than you know.”
Damian didn’t confront me.

Instead, the next afternoon, he came home early again without telling anyone.
And this time, he saw what happened when his family believed he wasn’t there.
