Chapter 10 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Two months passed.
The Paradise Valley mansion was transformed. The stifling, pretentious atmosphere created by Gertrude and Brenda had been swept away entirely. The house was filled with natural light, open windows, and the laughter of staff who were now paid industry-leading wages and treated as family.
Brenda had moved into a cramped studio apartment in central Phoenix, working as a retail clerk at an outlet mall. Gertrude had relocated to a small retirement community in Florida, living on her late husband’s meager pension, too humiliated to show her face in Arizona society ever again.
Damian had scaled back his corporate travel by half. He had appointed a trusted chief operating officer, freeing his time to be where he belonged: at home, beside Fiona.
On a warm Saturday evening, Damian led Fiona out onto the back terrace. A candlelit table was set for two, overlooking the glowing desert sunset.
Damian pulled out a velvet box from his jacket pocket and placed it beside Fiona’s plate.
She looked at him curiously, opening it. Inside rested her grandmother’s vintage ruby bracelet, polished and gleaming under the candlelight.
“You found it,” she whispered, her eyes shining with tears.
“It took my team three weeks to track down the private collector who bought it,” Damian smiled gently, taking her wrist and fastening the clasp. “It belongs to you. Just like this company belongs to you.”
He then slid a thick legal folder toward her.
“What is this?” Fiona asked.
“The deed to the entire estate, and fifty-one percent of the voting shares of O’Connor Grand Hotels,” Damian answered, his gaze steady and full of devotion. “It’s in your name, Fiona. Officially and legally. I will never let anyone make you feel powerless in your own home again.”
Fiona stared at the documents, then looked up into Damian’s eyes. For the first time in two years, the lingering shadow of insecurity was gone. She reached across the table, lacing her fingers with his.
“We built this together, Damian,” she said softly. “We keep it together.”

Damian leaned across the table, kissing her with a fierce, tender passion that had been missing for far too long. For the first time in years, Paradise Valley truly felt like home.
