Chapter 8 - Ambush at the Drake

The heavy silence of the hotel floor was shattered by the distinct rattle of suppressed gunfire.
Vincent’s posture changed in a microsecond. The grieving father vanished, replaced instantly by the lethal predator. He threw his weight against the door, snapping the security latch clean off the frame, and pushed me inside.
“Get down!” he barked, slamming the door shut and sliding the heavy wooden bureau in front of it with superhuman strength.
“What is happening?” I panicked, rushing toward the bedroom where Emily was already sitting up, rubbing her eyes in fear.
“Mommy? What was that loud noise?” Emily whimpered.
“Cassani’s hit squad,” Vincent muttered, pulling a sleek black semi-automatic pistol from beneath his shirt. “They tapped the hotel cameras. They bypassed my street perimeter.”

“Elena, take Emily into the bathroom and lock the door!” Vincent ordered, his voice commanding, leaving no room for argument. “Do not open it for anyone except me!”
“Vincent, you’re outnumbered!” I cried, clutching Emily against my chest.
He turned to look at me, and for the first time in seven years, I saw the fierce, unyielding devotion that had made me fall in love with him a decade ago.
“I failed you both once,” he said softly, clicking off the weapon’s safety. “They will have to step over my corpse before they lay a single finger on either of you.”

The suite door blew inward.
