Chapter 11 - The Unfinished War

Dawn broke over the Lake Forest estate, painting the autumn trees in shades of amber and gold.
Emily had fallen asleep in the guest bedroom upstairs, guarded by two loyal men stationed outside her door. I sat by the window in the study, watching the mist rise from the sprawling lawn. Vincent was awake, sitting upright, his coat draped over his bandaged shoulders as he reviewed security feeds on a laptop.
“Madison called,” I broke the silence. “She said the press has gone wild. They’re calling Emily the secret Moretti prodigy. The entire city knows she exists now.”
Vincent looked up, his jaw set in cold determination. “Let them talk. Today, I file the legal acknowledgment of paternity. Every asset I own will be placed in an irrevocable trust for Emily and you. No one will ever question her legitimacy again.”
“I told you, Vincent, I don't want your money—”
“It’s not charity, Elena,” he interrupted firmly, his voice filled with an intensity that made my breath catch. “It’s your birthright. It’s hers. I built an empire on blood, but I will consecrate it for my daughter. And if you give me the chance... I will spend the rest of my life earning back the right to stand beside you.”
I looked into his gray eyes, the anger that had sustained me for seven years slowly eroding, leaving behind a complex, terrifying warmth. I opened my mouth to speak, to tell him that maybe—just maybe—we could find a path forward.
Suddenly, every screen on the security desk went black.
A shrill, deafening alarm cut through the mansion. The red emergency lockdown lights flickered to life, bathing the room in a blood-red glow.
Vincent was on his feet in an instant, ignoring the agony tearing through his stitched shoulder. He racked the slide of his sidearm. “What is that?”
His head of security kicked open the double doors, his face white with dread.
“Boss! The perimeter motion sensors on the north gate just went offline!” the man shouted, holding a tactical radio spitting static. “The power grid has been cut! We have multiple armored vehicles breaching the outer tree line!”
“Cassani?” Vincent demanded.
“Worse,” the security chief choked out, his eyes darting toward the ceiling. “It’s Cassani, but they aren't alone. Sophia’s father—Don Salvatore—just mobilized the old Sicilian faction. They’ve declared you unfit to lead for dismantling the blood pact. They’re not here to negotiate. They’ve surrounded the entire valley!”
Before Vincent could give an order, the private satellite phone on his desk began to ring.
A single red light pulsed on the console.
Vincent hit the speakerphone with a bloody thumb. “Speak.”
A raspy, chilling voice echoed into the room over the wailing sirens.
“Good morning, Vincent,” Cassani’s voice purred with sadistic delight. “Look out the second-story window. Before you order your men to fire a single round... look at the balcony outside your daughter’s bedroom.”

My blood turned to ice.
Vincent and I sprinted toward the hallway, our footsteps pounding frantically against the stairs as a terrifying, muffled scream came from Emily’s room above.
