Chapter 4 - The Shadow Over Chicago

The rain came down in sheets, blurring the glowing neon of downtown Chicago into smears of gold and red.

Inside the back of a black rideshare, Emily sat quietly, looking out the window, her small fingers tracing raindrops on the glass. The heavy scholarship medal sat in her lap, neglected.

“Mom?” she asked softly.

“Yes, baby?”

“Was that man my dad?”

My heart clenched painfully. I had spent seven years preparing for this question, rehearsing gentle, age-appropriate answers in front of my bathroom mirror late at night. Yet hearing it out loud still felt like a physical blow.

“He is the man who gave you half your DNA, Emily,” I said gently, wrapping an arm around her small shoulders and pulling her close. “A father is someone who stays. Someone who puts bandages on your scraped knees, reads bedtime stories, and holds you when you have a nightmare. You have me. You will always have me.”

Emily leaned into my side, exhaling softly. “He had my eyes.”

“You have your own eyes, darling. And a mind ten times sharper than his.”

My phone buzzed violently in my purse. I pulled it out. It was Madison.

“Elena! Tell me you're not in the auditorium,” Madison’s voice crackled through the speaker before I could even say hello.

“We’re in a cab, heading back to the Drake Hotel,” I said, keeping my voice low. “It happened, Madison. I didn't plan it, but Emily asked me to go up, and... I broke the silence.”

“Good for you,” Madison declared fiercely, though her tone quickly turned grave. “But listen to me carefully. Vincent’s personal security network just mobilized across downtown. My contacts in the district attorney’s office say his vehicles are circling the Gold Coast. Elena, he is the head of the Moretti family. He’s not going to let this go. You need to pack your bags and take the first morning train back to Boston.”

“Our flight isn't until tomorrow afternoon.”

“Change it,” Madison warned. “Or better yet, let me send private security to escort you to the station right now. If Vincent decides to claim custody or lock down the city’s private airfields, you won’t stand a chance under local jurisdiction.”

“He has no legal custody. You drew up the ironclad abandonment clause yourself.”

“Law doesn't stop men like Vincent Moretti, Elena! You know how that family operates. He obeys the law only when it suits him.”

I looked out the back window. Two black Cadillac Escalades with tinted windows had turned behind our cab three blocks ago. They maintained a precise, rhythmic distance—close enough to intimidate, far enough not to provoke.

“Madison,” I said quietly, a cold dread settling in my stomach. “I think they’re already watching us.”
