Chapter 8 - Julian’s Desperation

By 8:00 PM, the Thatcher family empire was a smoldering crater.
The news of the kidnapping attempt at Saint Jude’s had leaked to the press within forty-five minutes. Media networks across the nation interrupted regular broadcasting with rolling banners: **BILLIONAIRE GRAHAM THATCHER IMPLICATED IN CONSPIRACY TO KIDNAP VICTIM IN CHILD TORTURE CASE.**
The Board of Directors of Thatcher Holdings had held an emergency virtual meeting at 7:30 PM. In a unanimous vote, they stripped Graham Thatcher of his role as Chairman and CEO, freezing his corporate credit cards and revoking his executive access to company assets.
Meanwhile, in the holding cells of the Manhattan Federal Detention Center, Julian Thatcher was experiencing reality for the first time in his thirty-two years of pampered existence.
His tailored cashmere sweater had been confiscated. He was dressed in a rough, ill-fitting orange jumpsuit. His phone was gone. His lawyer was under federal investigation. And the guards didn't care who his father was.
I arrived at the detention center accompanied by Agent Miller. Because of my security clearance and role as primary complainant, I was granted a face-to-face deposition interview in the secure interrogation room.
When the guard escorted Julian in and cuffed his ankle to the floor ring, Julian looked like a broken shell. His hair was greasy, his eyes red-rimmed from weeping, his skin sallow under the harsh fluorescent lighting.
When he saw me sitting across the stainless-steel table, he lunged forward, rattling his chains.
"Mave! Mave, please!" Julian cried, collapsing back into the chair. "You have to tell them! You have to stop this! They’re talking about sending me to a medium-security federal penitentiary for ten years!"
I sat with my arms crossed, watching him with the detached curiosity one might afford a laboratory specimen.
"Ten years seems lenient for an accessory to child torture," I said quietly.
"I didn't touch her!" Julian yelled, tears streaming down his cheeks. "You saw the video! It was Harlow! Harlow is insane! She’s been unhinged for years! She forces everyone to do what she wants! I was just... I was drunk, Mave! I thought she was just scaring Ren! I didn't think she would actually do it!"
"You laughed, Julian."
My words hit him like a physical blow. He froze, his mouth hanging slightly open.
"I listened to the audio four dozen times," I continued, leaning forward. "You didn't gasp. You didn't yell for her to stop. You zoomed the camera in. And when our five-year-old child shrieked in agony, you laughed so hard your hand shook. And then you let her sit on a cold bathroom floor for forty-eight minutes while you arranged a ride for your sister."
"I was scared!" he wailed, burying his face in his cuffed hands. "Dad said if we called 911 immediately, the police would arrest Harlow! He said he would disinherit me if I didn't protect the family name! Mave, look at me! I’m the father of your child! If I go to prison, what does that do to Ren?"
"It keeps her safe," I said. "For the rest of her life."
Julian lifted his head, his eyes flashing with desperate, cowardly rage. "You can't do this! We have billions! My dad has offshore accounts nobody can touch! If you drop the charges, I’ll sign over everything! Ten million! Twenty million! Just sign the affidavit saying the video was taken out of context!"
I reached into my pocket, pulled out a small digital recorder, and tapped the button to end the recording.
"Thank you, Julian," I said smoothly. "That was a direct confession to accessory after the fact, along with an explicit attempt to bribe a federal witness. Agent Miller was listening to every word through the mirror."
Julian’s face went hollow. He stared at the small black device on the table, realizing he had just driven the final nail into his own coffin.
"You're a monster," he whispered, his voice trembling with venom.
May you like
"No, Julian," I replied, standing up and smoothing my jacket. "I’m just a mother who spent sixteen years learning how to destroy people like you."
