Chapter 3 - The Digital Autopsy

At 2:15 AM, Ren woke up crying. The local nerve block had begun to wear off, and the searing agony of a third-degree thermal burn was breaking through the intravenous pain medication.
"Mama... it burns," she whimpered, her tiny body trembling against the crisp cotton sheets. "Please take it off. It feels like hot water."
The pediatric nurse, a soft-spoken woman named Elena, hurried in with a syringe of hydromorphone. As she pushed the medication into Ren’s port, Elena glanced at me, her expression laden with unspoken sorrow. She had seen the burn pattern. Anyone with eyes could tell the difference between an accidental brush against an iron and a five-second sustained press.
"The swelling will peak within thirty-six hours," Elena whispered as Ren’s breathing gradually hitched and settled back into sleep. "Doctor Aris is deeply concerned about contracture scarring near the jawline. We need a pediatric burn specialist from Boston. But... hospital administration is holding the transfer."
I looked up sharply. "Why?"
Elena looked toward the closed door, nervous. "Mr. Thatcher was in the chief of surgery's office twenty minutes ago. An anonymous donor just pledged five million dollars to the new neonatal wing. Suddenly, the administrative board is questioning whether moving the patient out of state is 'medically advisable' or just a parental overreaction."
A dark, icy calm settled behind my ribs. "Thank you for telling me, Elena."
Once she left, I picked up the tablet. The video file Julian had recorded was already downloaded into Vance’s forensic analysis suite. I put in my earpieces and pressed play.
I forced myself to watch it. Not as a mother—because as a mother, the sight of my daughter screaming against Harlow's manicured grip would have shattered my cognitive function. I watched it as an intelligence officer reviewing battlefield surveillance.
In the frame, Harlow Thatcher was wearing a pale pink Valentino dress. Her face was twisted into pure, venomous rage. Ren had dropped a glass of chilled cider; tiny amber droplets stained the silk hem. Harlow seized Ren by the back of her sundress, slamming her against the marble bathroom counter.
"You stupid little parasite!" Harlow shrieked. "Do you have any idea how much this cost? Julian, look at what this brat did!"
Julian’s voice drifted from behind the camera, slurred, wet with laughter. "Burn the little gutter rat, Harlow. Teach her some manners."
Harlow reached for the curling wand resting on a silicone pad. The red indicator light was solid—maximum heat. Ren was crying, apologizing hysterically, trying to curl into a ball. Harlow grabbed her chin, forced her head sideways, and deliberately pushed the barrel into the soft flesh of Ren’s right cheek.
Ren’s scream tore through the microphone, piercing, ragged, and raw.
Julian’s camera zoomed in. The autofocus adjusted. You could see the skin blister in real-time. And Julian laughed—a full-bellied, cruel chuckle. "Oh, shit! That's gonna leave a mark, Harlow. Mom’s gonna be pissed."
"She ruined my dress!" Harlow spat, tossing the wand into the sink. "Get her out of my room before I break her fingers."
The video ended.
I paused on the final frame. I enhanced Julian's reflection in the vanity mirror. He was holding a scotch glass in his left hand, his phone in his right, grinning like a hyena.
*Metadata extracted,* Vance’s message flashed at the bottom of the screen. *GPS coordinates confirm location at Julian Thatcher’s private penthouse. Audio spectrum proves no panic, no attempt to intervene. Timestamp confirms Julian waited forty-eight minutes before calling an ambulance. He called an Uber first to take Harlow to a private club.*
*Forty-eight minutes.* My child lay on a bathroom floor with an open third-degree wound for nearly an hour while the Thatchers coordinated their alibi.
I tapped the screen, opening a direct secure channel to Vance. "Are the financial intercepts ready?"
"Sitting on the launchpad, Boss," Vance's gruff voice came through the encrypted headset. "Harlow’s cosmetic brand, *Lumière Royale*, markets itself as organic, clean luxury. But six months ago, she switched suppliers to a cut-rate chemical lab in Shenzhen to boost her profit margins by four hundred percent. Her flagship anti-aging serum contains twice the legal limit of mercury and banned industrial solvents. Two dozen European customers filed private complaints, but Graham Thatcher paid off the testing agencies to bury the reports."
"Upload the unredacted lab reports, the customs declarations, and the wire transfers directly to the FDA, the European Medicines Agency, and the lead consumer affairs reporter at the *Wall Street Journal*," I commanded. "And Vance?"
"Yeah, Mave?"
"Harlow is attending the Vanity Fair young philanthropists' breakfast at ten this morning. Schedule the press blast for nine-forty-five."
"Consider it done. What about Julian?"

I stared at Julian’s laughing face frozen on my screen. "Julian thinks money makes him untouchable. Let’s show him what happens when the money realizes it belongs to the federal government."
