Chapter 7 - The Arrest of Harlow Thatcher

In a single, fluid explosion of movement, I kicked the rolling bedside table straight into the knees of the first contractor.
The heavy oak table struck his patellas with a sickening crack. As he buckled forward, gasping in shock, I lunged out of the chair. My right palm drove upward into the base of his nose—a classic open-palm strike that shattered cartilage and sent him crashing backward onto the floor, stunned and blinded by tears of agony.
The second man ripped his hand from his pocket, pulling a suppressed Glock 19.
He was fast. But I had spent a decade neutralizing armed insurgents in pitch-black rooms.
Before he could level the barrel at Ren’s bed, I closed the distance, stepping inside his weapon radius. My left hand seized the slide of the pistol, twisting it violently to the left to force an immediate out-of-battery malfunction. With my right elbow, I delivered a brutal, hammer-like strike directly to the side of his cervical spine.
He grunted, his knees wobbling. I spun behind him, wrapped my forearm around his throat in a modified rear-naked choke, and drove my knee directly into the back of his right thigh.
We hit the floor together with a dull thud.
"Drop the weapon," I whispered directly into his ear, tightening the choke until his carotid arteries were completely occluded. "Or I will break your neck in front of my daughter's bed."
His fingers opened. The suppressed Glock clattered onto the linoleum.
Within six seconds, his eyes rolled back, and he went limp.
I stood up, panting lightly, and immediately checked the first man. He was writhing on the floor, clutching his shattered nose, blood pooling between his fingers. I planted my heel firmly onto his wrist, pinning his arm to the ground.
"Who hired you?" I asked, my voice deadly cold.
"F-fuck you," he wheezed.
I applied twenty pounds of downward pressure onto his radial nerve. He let out a strangled shriek of agony.
"I won't ask twice," I said. "And the next sound you make will be your ulna snapping."
"Graham! Graham Thatcher!" he sobbed, all pretense of professional toughness vanishing. "His head of security... Marcus Cole. We were supposed to extract the kid to a private airfield in New Jersey... keep her out of reach until the arraignment was over! Please, don't kill me!"
The door flew open. Cassidy burst in, her sidearm drawn, followed by two armed federal marshals.
Cassidy took in the scene in half a second: two incapacitated operators on the floor, one unconscious, one weeping in blood, and me standing over them without a scratch on my clothing.
"Well," Cassidy said dryly, holstering her weapon. "Looks like you had everything under control."
"Take their comms devices and zip-tie them," I ordered, stepping over the groaning man to check on Ren.
Ren was still asleep, protected by the heavy sedatives, completely unaware that a covert kidnapping attempt had just occurred three feet from her bed.
The federal marshal walked over, knelt down, and pulled a prepaid satellite phone from the unconscious man's pocket. He flipped it open and examined the last incoming call.
"Caller ID is traced directly to Graham Thatcher’s personal office at Thatcher Tower," the marshal said, his jaw tightening with rage. "This is felony kidnapping conspiracy, attempted witness execution, and state-line flight."

"Call the United States Attorney," I said, wiping a speck of sweat from my brow. "Tell him it’s time to take Graham Thatcher off the board."
