Chapter 11 - The Shadow Behind the Empire

I froze on the bottom step of the staircase.

The chime was not the friendly ping of Vance’s casual encrypted texts. It was the harsh, two-tone electronic blast of a **PRIORITY-ONE RED OMEGA ALERT.**

That frequency had only one purpose. It was an automated emergency trigger reserved for compromised deep-cover operations within the Special Activities Division. It was a frequency that hadn't sounded on my hardware in seven years.

I walked over to the desk, every instinct instantly snapping back into high-alert combat posture.

I typed my twelve-character alphanumeric passkey into the ruggedized terminal. The screen shifted from black to blood red.

A live, high-priority transmission from Langley, Virginia.

*Origin: Office of the Inspector General, DIA Special Projects.*

*Classification: TOP SECRET // ORCON // NOFORN.*

*Subject: POST-OPERATIONAL AUDIT — THATCHER ENTERPRISES.*

My brows pulled tight. The Thatcher investigation had concluded three weeks ago. Every asset had been seized; every accomplice had been indicted. There was nothing left to audit.

I tapped the decrypt button.

A video file opened automatically.

It was not security footage from New York. It was a live feed from the maximum-security wing of the United States Penitentiary in Canaan, Pennsylvania—where Julian Thatcher had been transferred forty-eight hours ago to begin his eight-year sentence.

The camera showed Julian’s solitary holding cell.

The heavy steel door was wide open.

Inside the cell, the thin foam mattress was bare. The walls were empty. Julian was not there.

On the floor of the cell lay two federal corrections officers, their bodies sprawled unnaturally, pools of dark blood surrounding their heads. Both men had been eliminated with textbook double-taps to the brainstem. Clean. Professional. Military-grade execution.

A chill ran down my spine, cold and sharp as a scalpel.

I opened the accompanying classified intelligence dossier.

*Document ID: BLACK-HARVEST-09.*

*Author: Director Victor Vance (Deceased).*

Vance? Deceased? My breath caught in my throat. I had spoken to Vance on an encrypted line just yesterday afternoon.

I scrolled furiously through the pages.

*At 0200 hours today, forensic accounting teams tracing Graham Thatcher’s secondary shell companies uncovered an unlisted, off-the-books dark liquidity channel designated 'Project Cerberus.'*

*Graham Thatcher was not the principal architect of Thatcher Holdings.*

*For twenty-two years, Thatcher Holdings functioned as a domestic money-laundering conduit for rogue elements within the Defense Intelligence Agency's clandestine black-budget program.*

My hands tightened on the edges of the desk.

Graham Thatcher had never been a brilliant billionaire tycoon. He was a cutout. A civilian front man installed by high-ranking military officials to wash billions in untraceable black-ops operational funds through New York real estate.

And the man who had authorized Graham’s initial capital? The man whose signature was on the founding offshore charter of Project Cerberus?

General Donald Sterling.

General Sterling had been my commanding officer for eight years in the Special Activities Division—the very man who had signed my retirement discharge papers, the man who had promised to keep Ren’s identity and location permanently sealed from public records.

And General Sterling was the uncle of Judge Anthony Sterling—the corrupt judge Graham Thatcher had called to take Ren away from me.

A new line of text flashed in bold red across the bottom of the screen:

*WARNING: BREACH DETECTED.*

*General Sterling’s rogue tactical unit intercepted the prison transport at Canaan at 21:15 hours. Julian Thatcher has been extracted alive. Julian has provided your classified retirement coordinate database to Sterling’s wet-work team in exchange for extraction to South America.*

*Interception team estimated arrival at coastal Maine coordinates: 03:00 hours.*

I glanced at the digital clock on the desk.

It was 2:48 AM.

Outside the cottage, down by the dark tree line bordering the gravel driveway, the faint, synchronized crunch of gravel echoed through the night.

Then, with a dull, sickening pop, the electrical transformer at the end of our road exploded into a shower of blue sparks.

The cottage plunged into absolute darkness.

Upstairs, in the sudden silence of the dead night, Ren’s small voice called out from the dark.

May you like

"Mama? The nightlight turned off..."

Downstairs, three red infrared laser dots swept through the living room window, painting the wall directly behind my head.
