Chapter 5 - A Mother's Boundary

Daniel’s face flushed with shame, but defensiveness quickly took over.

“You don't understand the pressure I’m under!” he burst out, his voice shaking. “Everyone in our social circle is successful. Their parents bought them penthouses in Manhattan, funded their tech startups, gave them board seats! And what did you give me? A modest salary at a mid-tier logistics firm! You made me work from the bottom!”

“Because your father and I wanted you to build character!” I retorted, my voice firming with steel. “We wanted you to understand the sweat that goes into every dollar! And what did you do with the opportunities you were given? You took out predatory loans to buy luxury watches. You leased a German sports car to pretend you were a millionaire. And you married a woman who fell in love with your illusion, not your reality!”

“Vanessa loves me!”

“Vanessa loves the reservations you make and the checks you write,” I said ruthlessly. “Tell me, Daniel, did she ask how you were going to pay that eleven-thousand-dollar bill downstairs? Or did she simply demand that you borrow the money from me?”

Daniel went silent. His silence was an admission of guilt.

“She told you to come up here and beg, didn’t she?” I continued, leaning forward. “She told you that your mother couldn’t possibly stay mad at her only son. She told you to use your father’s memory to soften my heart.”

Tears welled in Daniel’s eyes. He looked down at his expensive leather shoes. “She said... she said if we didn’t get back into this suite, she would tell everyone on social media that you abused us. She has fifty thousand followers, Mom. She’s an influencer. She says she’ll ruin the resort’s reputation.”

I couldn’t help but let out a cold, genuine laugh. It was a sound that made Daniel flinch.

“She thinks a few Instagram stories can destroy forty years of institutional credibility?” I shook my head in utter disbelief. “Your wife is not only cruel, Daniel; she is remarkably stupid.”

“Mom, please,” he choked out. “Just pay the bill. Just give us a regular room in the main tower. I can’t take the screaming anymore. She’s been yelling at me for three hours straight.”

“No,” I said.

The word hung in the air, absolute and immovable.

“No?” Daniel repeated, stunned.

“You made this bed, Daniel. You signed the room reassignment with your own hand. You stood by while she insulted me in the lobby. Now you will sleep in room 104 beside the linen compactor. You will pay the eleven thousand dollars out of your own pocket. And if you attempt to charge a single cup of coffee to my name again, I will cut off your monthly trust fund disbursement permanently.”

Daniel gasped as if all the oxygen had been sucked from the room. “You... you wouldn't.”

“Try me,” I said quietly. “Now get out of my suite. I have an empire to run.”
